## About this text

Every one of these names is built on the word durga, “the hard to cross”: a fortress, a danger, a trouble with no way out. Each name praises the Mother as the one who removes such a difficulty, cuts through it, or carries her devotee across it.

The Gita Press prints the names with the Durga Saptashati, under the title Durga Dvatrimshannamamala, with a short account in Hindi. Brahma and the gods worshipped the Goddess; pleased, she offered them any boon. They asked how she might be quickly pleased and how she protects those in danger, and she answered with this garland of her own names. That is why the closing lines say “my” names.

In the Devi Mahatmya (chapter 11) the Goddess foretells that she will slay a great demon named Durgama and so become known as Durga; several of the names recall that victory.

## How it is recited

In the Gita Press account the Goddess gives her own instructions. Whoever is troubled by enemies, held in confinement, or threatened by a ruler, in battle, or by wild animals is freed from every fear by reading the thirty-two names a hundred and eight times. In great trouble, one may recite the namavali, or have learned Brahmins recite it, a thousand, ten thousand, or a hundred thousand times. Its purashcharana is thirty thousand recitations, and a homa of white sesame mixed with honey is also named. She also describes an image of herself to worship with these names, offering red oleander (kaner) flowers a hundred times.

## For an anushthan

An anushthan is a vowed course of recitation. Begin with a sankalpa, water in the right hand, stating the purpose, the daily count, and the number of days. Recite at the same time and place each day, counting on a mala, and keep the count the same; the Gita Press account gives thirty thousand recitations as the full purashcharana. Close with a homa of one tenth of the total (dashamsha), or extra recitation in its place. The Guru’s guidance comes first.

2. *Devī Māhātmya* (*Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa*), chapter 11: the Goddess foretells the slaying of the demon Durgama and the name Durga.
3. Some popular copies add a further verse (शत्रुभिः पीड्यमानो वा…) and a colophon, and trace the names to the *Tripura Rahasya*. The Gita Press prints neither in Sanskrit, and that passage has not been found in a printed edition, so the text follows the Gita Press alone.
