# Siddha Kunjika Stotram

The key to the Durga Saptashati
दुर्गा सप्तशती की कुंजी

The short hymn called the key (kunjika) to the Durga Saptashati: Shiva’s words to Parvati, the Kunjika mantra, verses of salutation built on seed syllables, and two closing verses. The full text comes first for unbroken recitation, then each part with its meaning in English and Hindi.

## About this text

Kunjika means “key”. In the opening verses Shiva tells Parvati that this hymn opens the Durga Saptashati: by its recitation alone one gains the fruit of reading the Saptashati, without the Kavacha, Argala, Kilaka, and Rahasyas, the hymns and meditation, the placings, or the worship that usually surround it. The closing verses put it the other way: the Saptashati read without the Kunjika bears no fruit, “like weeping in the forest”.

At its centre is the Kunjika mantra, which begins with the nine-syllable (Navarna) mantra of Chamunda, ऐं ह्रीं क्लीं चामुण्डायै विच्चे. The verses of salutation that follow take its syllables one by one, ऐंकारी, ह्रींकारी, क्लींकारी, and then greet the Goddess through strings of seed syllables. The Gita Press note on these verses says that knowing the meaning of the seed syllables is neither possible nor necessary; recitation is enough.

The colophon places the hymn in the Gauri Tantra of the Rudrayamala, as a dialogue of Shiva and Parvati. Many later works carry the Rudrayamala’s name, and the hymn is known today in the form printed with the Durga Saptashati, which is the text given here.

| Deity देवता | The Goddess as Chamunda, giver of the Saptashati’s fruit | चामुण्डा रूप में देवी |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Spoken by वक्ता | Shiva, to Parvati | शिव, पार्वती से |
| Where it is found स्रोत | Ascribed by its colophon to the Gauri Tantra of the Rudrayamala; printed with the Durga Saptashati | पुष्पिका के अनुसार रुद्रयामल का गौरीतन्त्र; दुर्गा सप्तशती के साथ मुद्रित |
| Parts अंग | Shiva’s words (4 verses), the mantra, 8 verses of salutation, 2 closing verses | शिव-वचन (4 श्लोक), मन्त्र, 8 नमस्कार-श्लोक, 2 समापन श्लोक |

## How it is recited

The Gita Press note says that reciting this hymn each morning removes every kind of obstacle, and that the Saptashati read together with the Kunjika and the Devi Sukta brings the highest attainment. Many recite it before the Saptashati, or on its own, above all in Navaratri.

गीता प्रेस की टिप्पणी के अनुसार प्रतिदिन प्रातःकाल इस स्तोत्र का पाठ करने से सब प्रकार के बाधा-विघ्न नष्ट हो जाते हैं, और इस कुंजिका स्तोत्र तथा देवीसूक्त के सहित सप्तशती पाठ से परम सिद्धि प्राप्त होती है। अनेक लोग इसे सप्तशती से पहले, या अलग से, विशेषकर नवरात्र में पढ़ते हैं।

## How to read the viniyoga

Before many hymns and mantras comes a short dedication, the *viniyoga* (“application”). It names six things about the mantra and then states what the recitation is for. In plain words:

**Rishi** (seer): the sage to whom the mantra was first revealed. **Chhandas** (metre): its rhythm, counted in syllables; *anushtubh*, the commonest, has four lines of eight syllables, *gayatri* three lines of eight. **Devata**: the deity whose power the mantra carries. **Bija** (seed): the syllable from which that power grows. **Shakti** (power): its energy. **Kilaka** (pin): the syllable that fastens the mantra, as Gurus explain it.

In the placing called *rishyadi nyasa* each is touched to a part of the body. The verse below gives the reason for the first three: the seer is the Guru, so he is borne on the head; the metre is made of syllables, so it sits on the tongue; the deity is known by the mind, so it is placed in the heart. Printed nyasas commonly add the seed at the private parts, the power at the feet, and the pin at the navel.

The texts tie mantra japa and nyasa to initiation (*diksha*) from a Guru; devotional recitation of a hymn is open to all. AstroShala’s download “Rishi, Chhandas, Devata” explains this in full.

Why the head, the tongue, the heart · सिर, जिह्वा, हृदय क्यों

ऋषिर्गुरुत्वात् शिरसैव धार्यः
छन्दोऽक्षरत्वाद्रसनागतं स्यात् ।
धियाऽवगन्तव्यतया सदैव
हृदि प्रदिष्टा मनुदेवता च ॥

ṛṣirgurutvāt śirasaiva dhāryaḥ
chando’kṣaratvādrasanāgataṁ syāt |
dhiyā’vagantavyatayā sadaiva
hṛdi pradiṣṭā manudevatā ca ||

**Meaning:** The seer, being the Guru, is to be borne on the head; the metre, being made of syllables, should rest on the tongue; and the deity of the mantra, being known by the mind, is always placed in the heart. (Prapanchasara, Patala 5)

**अर्थ:** ऋषि गुरु होने के कारण सिर पर ही धारण किए जाते हैं; छन्द अक्षर-रूप होने के कारण जिह्वा पर रहता है; और मन्त्र के देवता बुद्धि से जाने जाने के कारण सदा हृदय में स्थापित होते हैं। (प्रपञ्चसार, पञ्चम पटल)

## From the Mantra Mahodadhi

The *Mantramahodadhi* (Taranga 18, verses 105 to 147) gives the Chandi procedure that the Kunjika serves. Its mantra is the Navarna, the nine syllables with which the Kunjika mantra opens; its seers, metres, deities, powers, and seeds are in the viniyoga below. After the placings and the meditations on the three Goddesses, recite it 400,000 times and offer a tenth in homa with payasa (kheer).

This is Mahidhara’s procedure for the mantra of the deity, not part of the hymn above. Those who take up a vowed practice often join the two: the mantra japa as the main count, and the hymn recited before or after it. The Guru’s guidance comes first.

The Navarna mantra · नवार्ण मन्त्र

ऐं ह्रीं क्लीं चामुण्डायै विच्चे ॥

aiṁ hrīṁ klīṁ cāmuṇḍāyai vicce ||

**Meaning:** The nine-syllable mantra of Chamunda (verses 105 to 106).

**अर्थ:** चामुण्डा का नौ अक्षरों वाला मन्त्र (श्लोक 105 से 106)।

**Meaning:** Of this Navarna mantra, the seers are Brahma, Vishnu, and Rudra; the metres gayatri, ushnik, and anushtubh; the deities Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, and Mahasarasvati; the powers Nanda, Shakambhari, and Bhima; the seeds Raktadantika, Durga, and Bhramari. It is taken up in japa for the fulfilment of every wish.

**अर्थ:** इस नवार्ण मन्त्र के ऋषि ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और रुद्र; छन्द गायत्री, उष्णिक् और अनुष्टुप्; देवता महाकाली, महालक्ष्मी और महासरस्वती; शक्तियाँ नन्दा, शाकम्भरी और भीमा; बीज रक्तदन्तिका, दुर्गा और भ्रामरी हैं। सब अभीष्टों की सिद्धि के लिए जप में इसका विनियोग है।

## Pronouncing the seed syllables

Seed syllables (bīja) are pronounced differently in different traditions (sampradāyas), above all the final ṁ, which some close on the lips and others hold as a nasal hum; where the Guru has given a way, follow it. As a guide: ॐ “om”; ऐं “aim” (to rhyme with “time”); ह्रीं “hreem”; क्लीं “kleem”; ग्लौं “glaum”; हुं “hum” (as in “hook”); जूं “joom”; सः “saha”, with a soft echo; विच्चे “vich-chay”. In the strings धां धीं धूं and the rest, keep the three vowels distinct: long “aa”, long “ee”, long “oo”.

## For an anushthan

An anushthan is a vowed course of recitation. Begin with a sankalpa, water in the right hand, stating the purpose, the daily count, and the number of days. Recite at the same time and place each day, counting on a mala, and keep the count the same. Many Gurus add a round of the Navarna mantra (ॐ ऐं ह्रीं क्लीं चामुण्डायै विच्चे) before and after the sitting; the Gita Press gives its full procedure (Navarna vidhi) in the same volume, pp. 52 to 55. Close with a homa of one tenth of the total (dashamsha), or extra recitation in its place. The Guru’s guidance comes first.

1. *Siddhakuñjikāstotram*, in *Śrīdurgāsaptaśatī*, Sanskrit with Hindi translation, Gita Press, Gorakhpur (code 118), pp. 230 to 232, with the Gita Press notes on pp. 231 and 232. The text and its colophon follow this edition. The edition closes salutation verse 5 after a single half-line; here the half-lines from that point are paired into full verses, so that verses 5 to 8 each hold two lines.
2. The viniyoga follows the *Siddhakuñjikāstotram* of the Gauri Tantra of the Rudrayamala, as printed in *Durgā Saptaśatī with Guptavatī Pāṭh by Bhāskar Rāy*, compiled by Dr. Ketu Ramachandrasekhar, Giri Trading Agency, p. 389. The Gita Press edition prints the hymn without a viniyoga.
3. Mahīdhara, *Mantramahodadhi*, with the *Naukā* and Sudhakar Malaviya’s Hindi commentary, Chaukhamba Sanskrit Pratishthan, Delhi, Taranga 18, verses 105 to 147, pp. 564 to 574. The viniyoga is the Hindi commentary’s (vimarsha, p. 565), shortened by leaving out its tattva and fruit clauses.
4. Prapañcasāra 5, quoted in Girvanendra Sarasvati, *Prapañcasārasārasaṅgraha*, Part 1, Chaukhamba Surbharati, Varanasi, 2007, p. 19.
