Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj) Gemstone
Yellow sapphire, known in India as Pukhraj, is the gemstone of Jupiter in Vedic astrology. It suits Sagittarius, Pisces, Aries, Leo, and Scorpio ascendants best, is set in gold, and is worn on the index finger on a Thursday, in Jupiter’s hora. Buy a natural yellow sapphire with a lab report, not yellow topaz sold under the same name, and only after your chart confirms that a stronger Jupiter will help you.

What a Yellow Sapphire Represents in Jyotish
Jupiter is the guru of the gods. It rules wisdom, teachers, children, wealth, dharma, and good counsel, and in a woman’s chart the tradition also reads it for her husband. Its gem is the yellow sapphire (puṣparāga), the colour of turmeric and ripe mangoes, the colour of things that nourish.
Jupiter is exalted in Cancer and debilitated in Capricorn. A yellow sapphire is meant for a Jupiter that is good for you but weak, debilitated, hemmed in by malefics, or placed in a difficult house.
A yellow sapphire is the gentlest of the strong stones, which is why it is so often worn without a chart. Even a gentle planet can rule the wrong houses.
Who Should Wear a Yellow Sapphire
Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces, so for every ascendant it owns two houses. Read both together.
| Ascendant | Houses Jupiter rules | Yellow sapphire |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 9th and 12th | Suitable; the ninth-house rulership comes first |
| Taurus | 8th and 11th | Avoid |
| Gemini | 7th and 10th | Only if Jupiter is well placed |
| Cancer | 6th and 9th | Suitable with care |
| Leo | 5th and 8th | Suitable |
| Virgo | 4th and 7th | Only if Jupiter is well placed |
| Libra | 3rd and 6th | Avoid |
| Scorpio | 2nd and 5th | Suitable |
| Sagittarius | 1st and 4th | Suitable; Jupiter is the ascendant lord |
| Capricorn | 3rd and 12th | Avoid |
| Aquarius | 2nd and 11th | Mixed; only if Jupiter is well placed |
| Pisces | 1st and 10th | Suitable; Jupiter is the ascendant lord |
Then judge Jupiter itself: its sign, its house, its aspects, and its strength in the navamsa. A yellow sapphire tends to show its effect most clearly during Jupiter’s own Mahadasha or Antardasha.
Who Should Avoid a Yellow Sapphire
Avoid it when Jupiter rules difficult houses for your ascendant, as it does for Taurus, Libra, and Capricorn, and when the stone has been coloured by beryllium diffusion.
Gemstones not to wear with a yellow sapphire
Jupiter counts Mercury and Venus as its enemies, so a yellow sapphire is not worn with emerald or diamond. Custom also keeps blue sapphire and hessonite away from it. Ruby (Sun), pearl (Moon), and red coral (Mars), Jupiter’s friends, may be worn with it when the chart supports them as well.

Mantras for the Yellow Sapphire
Any one of the three mantras below may be used. For a full course of japa for Jupiter, many teachers prescribe 19,000 repetitions spread over several Thursdays; for energising the ring, 108 is enough.
Vedic mantra for Jupiter
ॐ बृहस्पते अति यदर्यो अर्हाद्द्युमद्विभाति क्रतुमज्जनेषु ।
यद्दीदयच्छवस ऋतप्रजात तदस्मासु द्रविणं धेहि चित्रम् ॥
Oṁ bṛhaspate ati yad aryo arhād dyumad vibhāti kratumaj janeṣu |
yad dīdayac chavasa ṛtaprajāta tad asmāsu draviṇaṁ dhehi citram ||
Meaning: “O Bṛhaspati, born of truth, grant us that wonderful wealth which the noble deserve, which shines brightly and wisely among people and blazes with strength.” Oṁ is added in recitation; it is not part of the Vedic verse.
Navagraha Stotra verse for Jupiter
देवानां च ऋषीणां च गुरुं काञ्चनसन्निभम् ।
बुद्धिभूतं त्रिलोकेशं तं नमामि बृहस्पतिम् ॥
devānāṁ ca ṛṣīṇāṁ ca guruṁ kāñcanasannibham |
buddhibhūtaṁ trilokeśaṁ taṁ namāmi bṛhaspatim ||
Meaning: “I bow to Bṛhaspati, the teacher of the gods and the sages, golden in colour, wisdom itself, lord of the three worlds.”
Bīja mantra of Jupiter
ॐ ग्रां ग्रीं ग्रौं सः गुरवे नमः
Oṁ grāṁ grīṁ grauṁ saḥ gurave namaḥ
Meaning: the seed syllables of Jupiter, followed by “salutations to the Guru”. This form comes from later tradition rather than the Vedas, and it is the one most widely used to energise a yellow sapphire.
Natural, Treated, Lab-Grown, and Fake Yellow Sapphires
Yellow sapphire is yellow corundum, the same mineral as ruby and blue sapphire. Sri Lanka is the classic source. The name causes confusion in Indian markets, where “pukhraj” is sometimes used for yellow topaz and citrine is sold as “sunela”. A true pukhraj is a yellow sapphire. In the market you will meet:
- Natural, heated yellow sapphire. Common and widely accepted, as long as the heating is disclosed.
- Natural, unheated yellow sapphire. Rarer and costlier.
- Beryllium-diffused sapphire. Pale stones heated with beryllium to create a strong yellow or orange colour. Not suitable as a remedy.
- Lab-grown yellow sapphire. Same chemistry, very low price.
- Imitations. Yellow topaz, citrine, glass, and yellow cubic zirconia.
How to Tell a Genuine Yellow Sapphire
Ask for a lab report from a laboratory you can check yourself, such as the Gem Testing Laboratory in Jaipur, the Gemmological Institute of India in Mumbai, IGI, or GIA. It should say “natural corundum, yellow sapphire”, and state whether the stone is heated and whether any diffusion was found. Be wary of a large, bright, flawless stone at a low price, and of any seller who calls topaz or citrine “pukhraj”.
Is Your Yellow Sapphire Working?
Before you wear it, note where you stand in Jupiter’s areas: your judgement, your studies and teachers, your children, your savings, and, for a woman, her married life. Watch the same areas over the following weeks. When the stone suits the chart, people usually describe better judgement and steadier progress. If you see a clear run of trouble in these areas soon after wearing it, take it off and have your chart checked again.
Caring for and Re-energising Your Yellow Sapphire
Yellow sapphire is hard and durable. Clean it in warm water with mild soap and a soft brush. Repeat the energising puja once a year on a Thursday, and again if the ring has been off for a long time or has gone for repair.
Substitutes for Yellow Sapphire
Yellow topaz and citrine are the usual substitutes (upratna), and the tradition treats them as weaker. Respect for teachers and elders, chanting Jupiter’s mantra, and giving chana dal in charity on Thursdays cost little, and they remain the first remedies for Jupiter.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who should wear a yellow sapphire?
People with a Sagittarius, Pisces, Aries, Leo, or Scorpio ascendant whose Jupiter needs strength are the usual candidates. The full chart and the running dasha decide.
On which finger is a yellow sapphire worn?
On the index finger, usually of the right hand, set in gold.
Is yellow topaz the same as pukhraj?
No. A true pukhraj is a yellow sapphire. Yellow topaz is a different mineral, used only as a substitute.
Can women wear a yellow sapphire for marriage?
Only if Jupiter is good for her chart. The tradition reads Jupiter for a woman’s husband, but the stone still has to suit her ascendant.
How many ratti should a yellow sapphire be?
Our usual recommendation is 5.25 ratti, about 4.77 carats. The chart and the stone’s quality decide the final weight.
Can I wear a yellow sapphire without consulting an astrologer?
It is not advisable. For Taurus, Libra, and Capricorn ascendants, it strengthens a planet that rules difficult houses.
Gemstones are worn as a traditional astrological remedy, not as a treatment for any illness. For any health concern, please consult a qualified doctor.
