Hessonite (Gomed) Gemstone
Hessonite, known in India as Gomed, is the gemstone of Rahu in Vedic astrology. Because Rahu owns no sign, the stone is judged from Rahu’s house, companions, and period rather than from the ascendant alone. It is worn on the middle finger on a Saturday, and it should be worn only after your chart confirms that a stronger Rahu will help you.

What Hessonite Represents in Jyotish
Rahu is the head of the demon Svarbhānu, cut off by Viṣṇu’s discus when he stole a taste of the nectar of immortality. The head lived on, hungry and restless, and it still swallows the Sun and the Moon at eclipses. That is Rahu’s nature in a chart: appetite, ambition, foreign lands and foreign ways, technology, politics, sudden rises, and sudden confusion. Its gem is hessonite (gomedaka), honey-coloured, a shade that Indian tradition likens to gomūtra.
Rahu has no body and owns no sign in the Parashari scheme, so it gives the results of the planet whose sign it occupies and of the planets with it. Teachers differ on its exaltation: one scheme places it in Taurus, with debilitation in Scorpio; another places it in Gemini, with debilitation in Sagittarius. Many astrologers also follow the rule that Rahu acts like Saturn.
Hessonite does not calm Rahu. It strengthens it. When Rahu is well placed, that brings drive and opportunity; when it is not, the same push brings confusion.
Who Should Wear Hessonite
Because Rahu owns no sign, hessonite is judged from Rahu’s position and period rather than from the ascendant alone.
| Rahu’s position | What it usually means for hessonite |
|---|---|
| 3rd, 6th, 10th, or 11th house | The houses where Rahu traditionally does well; hessonite is most often considered here |
| Rahu Mahadasha or Antardasha running | The period in which the stone is usually considered, when Rahu is well placed |
| With or aspected by benefics, or in a friendly sign | Supports wearing, after the rest of the chart is checked |
| 1st, 5th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house, or with the Moon or the Sun | Needs careful judgement; often not advised |
Since Rahu is said to act like Saturn, many astrologers consider hessonite more readily for Taurus, Libra, Capricorn, and Aquarius ascendants, where Saturn is a good planet. The full chart still decides.
Who Should Avoid Hessonite
Avoid hessonite when Rahu sits with the Moon or the Sun, when it occupies a difficult house without support, and when the chart already shows restlessness, obsession, or confused judgement that a stronger Rahu would worsen.
Gemstones not to wear with hessonite
Custom keeps hessonite away from ruby, pearl, red coral, and yellow sapphire, and never pairs it with cat’s eye, the gem of Ketu. Emerald, diamond, and blue sapphire may be worn with it when the chart supports them as well.
How to Wear Hessonite
| What | Hessonite |
|---|---|
| Weight | 5.25 to 6.25 ratti (about 4.8 to 5.7 carats) is our usual range; the chart and the stone’s quality decide |
| Metal | Silver, iron, or an alloy |
| Finger | Middle finger, usually of the right hand |
| Day | Saturday |
| Time | Usually Saturn’s horā, since Rahu has no horā of its own; some prefer the evening |
| Lunar phase | Preferably the bright half of the month (śukla pakṣa) |
| Setting | Open at the back, so the stone touches the skin |
Energising Hessonite: Step-by-Step Puja
- On a Saturday, bathe and wear clean clothes, dark blue or black if you have them.
- Dip the ring in unboiled cow’s milk mixed with a little Gangajal, then rinse it in clean water.
- Place it on a dark blue cloth at your home shrine, with a sesame-oil lamp, incense, and flowers.
- Offer your prayer to Rahu and, as many families do, to Durgā.
- Chant one of the mantras below 108 times, counting on a mala.
- Wear the ring on your middle finger.
- If you can, give a blanket, mustard oil, or black sesame in charity the same day.
Mantras for Hessonite
Any one of the three mantras below may be used. For a full course of japa for Rahu, many teachers prescribe 18,000 repetitions; for energising the ring, 108 is enough.
Vedic mantra for Rahu
ॐ कया नश्चित्र आ भुवदूती सदावृधः सखा ।
कया शचिष्ठया वृता ॥
Oṁ kayā naś citra ā bhuvad ūtī sadāvṛdhaḥ sakhā |
kayā śaciṣṭhayā vṛtā ||
Meaning: “With what help will he come to us, the wondrous one, our ever-prospering friend? With what most mighty company?” Oṁ is added in recitation; it is not part of the Vedic verse.
Navagraha Stotra verse for Rahu
अर्धकायं महावीर्यं चन्द्रादित्यविमर्दनम् ।
सिंहिकागर्भसम्भूतं तं राहुं प्रणमाम्यहम् ॥
ardhakāyaṁ mahāvīryaṁ candrādityavimardanam |
siṁhikāgarbhasambhūtaṁ taṁ rāhuṁ praṇamāmy aham ||
Meaning: “I bow to Rāhu, the half-bodied one of great might, who eclipses the Moon and the Sun, born of the womb of Siṁhikā.”
Bīja mantra of Rahu
ॐ भ्रां भ्रीं भ्रौं सः राहवे नमः
Oṁ bhrāṁ bhrīṁ bhrauṁ saḥ rāhave namaḥ
Meaning: the seed syllables of Rahu, followed by “salutations to Rāhu”. This form comes from later tradition rather than the Vedas, and it is the one most widely used to energise hessonite.
Natural and Imitation Hessonite
Hessonite is a variety of grossular garnet, honey-yellow to cinnamon-brown in colour. Sri Lanka is the classic source, and good stones also come from parts of Africa. Hessonite is usually not treated, which makes it simpler to buy than most planetary gems. The main risks are brown or orange glass, and other brown stones sold as gomed.
How to Tell Genuine Hessonite
Ask for a lab report from a laboratory you can check yourself, such as the Gem Testing Laboratory in Jaipur, the Gemmological Institute of India in Mumbai, IGI, or GIA. It should name the stone as natural grossular garnet, hessonite. Under a 10x lens, hessonite often shows a swirling, syrupy look inside, like honey stirred into water, which glass does not. Round gas bubbles point to glass.
Is Your Hessonite Working?
Before you wear it, note where you stand in Rahu’s areas: your ambitions, dealings with foreign places or people, work with technology, and any long-running confusion or fear. Watch the same areas over the following weeks. When hessonite suits the chart, people usually describe clearer direction and opportunities opening. If you see a clear run of trouble, such as worse confusion, sudden setbacks, or deception, take it off and have your chart checked again.
Caring for and Re-energising Your Hessonite
Hessonite is fairly hard but can chip on a sharp knock. Clean it in lukewarm water with mild soap and a soft brush, and keep it away from sudden heat. Repeat the energising puja once a year on a Saturday, and again if the ring has been off for a long time.
Remedies Without Hessonite
There is no widely agreed substitute for hessonite. Chanting Rahu’s mantra, worship of Durgā, and charity on Saturdays cost little, and they remain the first remedies for Rahu.
Hessonite is chosen from the whole chart. If you are not sure whether it suits you, ask us before you buy, and read our guide to gemstones in Vedic astrology.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who should wear hessonite?
People whose Rahu is well placed, usually in the 3rd, 6th, 10th, or 11th house, especially during Rahu’s period. The full chart decides.
Can hessonite be worn during Rahu Mahadasha?
Only if Rahu is well placed in your chart. A difficult Rahu becomes stronger with the stone, not milder.
Can I wear hessonite and cat’s eye together?
No. Custom never pairs the gems of Rahu and Ketu.
Which finger is hessonite worn on?
On the middle finger, usually of the right hand.
How many ratti should hessonite be?
Our usual range is 5.25 to 6.25 ratti, about 4.8 to 5.7 carats. The chart and the stone’s quality decide the final weight.
Can I wear hessonite without consulting an astrologer?
It is not advisable. Rahu’s results depend on its exact placement, and a poorly placed Rahu made stronger can bring confusion.
Gemstones are worn as a traditional astrological remedy, not as a treatment for any illness. For any health concern, please consult a qualified doctor.
