Diamond (Heera) Gemstone
Diamond, known in India as Heera, is the gemstone of Venus in Vedic astrology. It suits Taurus, Libra, Capricorn, and Aquarius ascendants best, is set in gold or platinum, and is worn on a Friday, in Venus’s hora. Natural and lab-grown diamonds look identical, so buy only a natural diamond whose grading report says so, and only after your chart confirms that a stronger Venus will help you.

What a Diamond Represents in Jyotish
Venus is the teacher of the daityas and the planet of pleasure, beauty, and comfort. It rules marriage and, in a man’s chart, the tradition reads it for his wife. It also rules vehicles, fine clothes, music, the arts, and the small luxuries of a well-kept home. Its gem is the diamond (vajra), the hardest of all stones, clear as the morning star that Venus is.
Venus is exalted in Pisces and debilitated in Virgo. A diamond is meant for a Venus that is good for you but weak, debilitated, burnt close to the Sun, or pressed by malefics.
A diamond does not bring love. It strengthens Venus, and Venus then gives what your chart has promised it.
Who Should Wear a Diamond
Venus rules Taurus and Libra, so for every ascendant it owns two houses. Read both together.
| Ascendant | Houses Venus rules | Diamond |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 2nd and 7th | Generally not advised |
| Taurus | 1st and 6th | Suitable; Venus is the ascendant lord |
| Gemini | 5th and 12th | Suitable; the fifth-house rulership comes first |
| Cancer | 4th and 11th | Mixed; only if Venus is well placed |
| Leo | 3rd and 10th | Only if Venus is well placed |
| Virgo | 2nd and 9th | Suitable |
| Libra | 1st and 8th | Suitable; Venus is the ascendant lord |
| Scorpio | 7th and 12th | Avoid |
| Sagittarius | 6th and 11th | Avoid |
| Capricorn | 5th and 10th | Suitable; Venus is the yogakāraka |
| Aquarius | 4th and 9th | Suitable; Venus is the yogakāraka |
| Pisces | 3rd and 8th | Avoid |
Then judge Venus itself: its sign, its distance from the Sun, its companions, and its strength in the navamsa. A diamond tends to show its effect most clearly during Venus’s own Mahadasha or Antardasha.
Who Should Avoid a Diamond
Avoid a diamond when Venus rules difficult houses for your ascendant, as it does for Scorpio, Sagittarius, and Pisces, and when the stone is cracked, filled, or lab-grown and sold as natural.
Gemstones not to wear with a diamond
Venus counts the Sun and the Moon as its enemies, so a diamond is not worn with ruby or pearl. Custom also keeps red coral and yellow sapphire away from it. Emerald (Mercury) and blue sapphire (Saturn), Venus’s friends, may be worn with a diamond when the chart supports them as well.

Energising a Diamond: Step-by-Step Puja
- On a Friday, bathe early and wear clean clothes, white if you have them.
- Dip the ring in unboiled cow’s milk mixed with a little Gangajal, then rinse it in clean water.
- Place it on a white cloth at your home shrine, with a ghee lamp, incense, and white flowers.
- Offer your prayer to Venus and, as many families do on Fridays, to Lakṣmī.
- Chant one of the mantras below 108 times, counting on a mala.
- Wear the ring on your chosen finger while Venus’s horā is still running.
- If you can, give rice, sugar, or white cloth in charity the same day.
Mantras for the Diamond
Any one of the three mantras below may be used. For a full course of japa for Venus, many teachers prescribe 16,000 repetitions spread over several Fridays; for energising the ring, 108 is enough.
Vedic mantra for Venus
ॐ प्र वः शुक्राय भानवे भरध्वम् ।
हव्यं मतिं चाग्नये सुपूतम् ॥
Oṁ pra vaḥ śukrāya bhānave bharadhvam |
havyaṁ matiṁ cāgnaye supūtam ||
Meaning: “Bring to Agni, the bright and shining one, your offering and your prayer, well purified.” Oṁ is added in recitation. This is the Vedic mantra used for Venus in the South Indian Navagraha tradition; North Indian practice uses a different Yajurveda mantra.
Navagraha Stotra verse for Venus
हिमकुन्दमृणालाभं दैत्यानां परमं गुरुम् ।
सर्वशास्त्रप्रवक्तारं भार्गवं प्रणमाम्यहम् ॥
himakundamṛṇālābhaṁ daityānāṁ paramaṁ gurum |
sarvaśāstrapravaktāraṁ bhārgavaṁ praṇamāmy aham ||
Meaning: “I bow to Bhārgava, white as snow, the jasmine, and the lotus stalk, the supreme teacher of the daityas, who expounds all the śāstras.”
Bīja mantra of Venus
ॐ द्रां द्रीं द्रौं सः शुक्राय नमः
Oṁ drāṁ drīṁ drauṁ saḥ śukrāya namaḥ
Meaning: the seed syllables of Venus, followed by “salutations to Śukra”. This form comes from later tradition rather than the Vedas, and it is the one most widely used to energise a diamond.
Natural, Treated, Lab-Grown, and Fake Diamonds
Diamond is pure carbon, formed deep in the earth. Most natural diamonds today come from southern Africa, Russia, Canada, and Australia. Diamond is where the line between natural and lab-grown matters most, because the two look identical:
- Natural diamond. Mined, cut, and graded by the four Cs: cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight.
- Treated natural diamond. Cracks filled with glass, inclusions removed by laser drilling, or colour changed by high pressure and heat. All of these must be disclosed.
- Lab-grown diamond. Real diamond made in a factory, now common and far cheaper. It cannot be told from a natural diamond without laboratory instruments.
- Simulants. Cubic zirconia, moissanite, white sapphire, and glass.
How to Tell a Genuine Diamond
Ask for a grading report from a laboratory you can check yourself, such as IGI, GIA, or the Gemmological Institute of India in Mumbai. It should state clearly whether the diamond is natural or laboratory-grown, and list any treatment. Many reports also note a tiny number laser-inscribed on the diamond’s edge; ask the jeweller to show you that it matches the report. A lab-grown diamond sold without the words “laboratory-grown” on its report is being sold dishonestly. Home tests, and even simple electronic testers, cannot tell natural from lab-grown.
Is Your Diamond Working?
Before you wear it, note where you stand in Venus’s areas: your marriage or relationship, comforts at home, vehicles, and your enjoyment of art and music. Watch the same areas over the following weeks. When a diamond suits the chart, people usually describe more harmony at home and an easier flow of comforts. If you see a clear run of trouble in these areas soon after wearing it, take it off and have your chart checked again.
Caring for and Re-energising Your Diamond
Diamond is the hardest gem, but it can still chip on a sharp knock. Clean it in warm water with mild soap and a soft brush, since oils from the skin dull its sparkle. Store it apart from other rings, because it scratches softer stones. Repeat the energising puja once a year on a Friday, and again if the ring has been off for a long time or has gone for repair.
Substitutes for Diamond
White sapphire and white zircon are the usual substitutes (upratna), and the tradition treats them as weaker. Worship on Fridays, chanting Venus’s mantra, and giving rice or sugar in charity cost little, and they remain the first remedies for Venus.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who should wear a diamond?
People with a Taurus, Libra, Capricorn, or Aquarius ascendant whose Venus needs strength are the usual candidates. For Capricorn and Aquarius, Venus is the yogakāraka. The full chart and the running dasha decide.
Is a diamond engagement ring an astrological remedy?
Not by itself. A diamond works as a remedy when it suits the chart and is energised; a ring chosen only for fashion is jewellery.
Can I wear a lab-grown diamond for astrology?
The tradition prescribes a natural diamond. A lab-grown stone is real diamond chemically, but it is not what the tradition asks for.
Can I wear a diamond and a ruby together?
No. Venus counts the Sun as its enemy, so the two are not worn together.
Which finger is a diamond worn on?
On the ring finger or the little finger, usually of the right hand, set in gold or platinum.
Can I wear a diamond without consulting an astrologer?
It is not advisable. For Scorpio, Sagittarius, and Pisces ascendants, a diamond strengthens a planet that rules difficult houses.
Gemstones are worn as a traditional astrological remedy, not as a treatment for any illness. For any health concern, please consult a qualified doctor.
