Diwali Puja Vidhi: Step-by-Step Guide
Diwali Puja Vidhi Step 1: Clean and Purify Your Home
Cleaning your entire home/premises is essential. Therefore, clean every corner of your home. After cleaning, sprinkle some Gangajal (water from the holy river Ganga) in every corner and middle of your home to purify the area.
Diwali Puja Vidhi Step 2: Set up the Puja Altar
Keep a table or stool in your puja room or living room; take kumkum (red turmeric powder) and make Swastika with it at its centre, and write “Shubh” on the left of it and “Laabh” on its right in Hindi or your regional language. Then cover it with a red cotton cloth and put a handful of grains in the centre of it.
Diwali Puja Vidhi Step 3: Place a Kalash
Put a Kalash (silver/bronze/earthen pot) over the grains. Make a Swastika or symbol of “Om” or “Aum” on it, and tie a sacred Kalawa thread around its neck. Then fill it with 75% water and keep one supari (betel nut), one flower, puja scent, durva grass, silver or currency coin and some rice grains (akshat) inside it. Put five mango leaves at the edge of the Kalash from the inside in a circular design; the leaves should be half inside and half outside and close its lid.

Diwali Puja Vidhi Step 4: Place Idols of Ganesha and Lakshmi for Puja
Place the idol of Lord Ganesha on the left side of the Kalash. Then make a small flatbed of rice grains on the Kalash lid, and draw a lotus flower using haldi (yellow turmeric powder) over it; now, keep the idol of the Goddess Lakshmi on top of the Kalash lid. Further, keep some gold/silver or currency coins in front of the Goddess and offer a real Lotus Flower. However, if Lotus Flower isn’t available, you can offer the Goddess any flower of your choice.
Diwali Puja Vidhi Step 5: Place Account Books or Wealth-related Items
You may now place your business or accountancy book in front of idols, such as bill books, ledger, and other wealth or business-related items. If you are not into business, you can keep your Professional Resume or anything that helps you earn your bread and butter. You can also put some gold and silver coin, currency note or bundles (if any).
Diwali Puja Vidhi Step 6: Apply Kumkum or Chandan Tilak and Light Diyas
Now take kumkum or chandan and apply tilak on Lord Ganesh’s forehead and Goddess Lakshmi’s forehead. Light dhoop batti (incense stick) and light two big diyas (earthen lamps), one of Clarified Butter (Desi Ghee) and another of Mustard or Sesame Oil. Light nine small diyas with mustard or sesame oil. The small diyas are for nine planets. You can also light some candles if you want.
Diwali Puja Vidhi Step 7: Offer Flowers
You may now offer flowers to Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesh. Offer Janeu (white sacred thread) to both the Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesh.
Diwali Puja Vidhi Step 8: Recite Puja Mantra and Perform Homam / Havan
Keep a flower in your hands and join your palms in prayer mode, close your eyes and recite the Diwali Puja Mantra. You can recite Diwali Puja Mantra from a book or perform Homam / Havan reciting Shri Suktam and Kanak Dhara Stotra. After your prayer, offer the flower to Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi.
Diwali Puja Vidhi Step 9: Offer Gangajal.
Take a Lakshmi idol and pour Gangajal (holy water) over it for bathing, followed by panchamrita. Bathe the idol again with Gangajal, and put it back on top of the Kalash.
Diwali Puja Vidhi Step 10: Offer Garlands (Mala)
Put haldi, chandan, kumkum and rice grains on the idol. Put the garland (mala) around the neck of the Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesh. Light agarbatti and offer it to the God and Goddess by waving or rotating it clockwise 7 to 11 times.
Diwali Puja Vidhi Step 11: Offer Fruits and Sweets.
Take coconut, supari (betel nut), and paan (betel) leaves and offer them to the God and Goddess. In addition, offer at least five types of fruits and sweets.Â
Diwali Puja Vidhi Step 12: Perform Maa Lakshmi Aarti
Now, take a thali (plate) and put a lightning Diya (earthen lamp) over it, ring the puja bell on a low note because Maa Lakshmi doesn’t like loud noise, and perform the Lakshmi Aarti. Afterwards, if you wish, you can recite four other Aartis, one for Lord Ganesh, one for Lord Ram, one for Goddess Durga or Kaali, and one for Lord Kuber or Lord Vishnu.
