About this text
Kamakhya is the Goddess of Nilachala, the Blue Hill above the Brahmaputra at Guwahati in Assam, the ancient Kamarupa. Her temple is counted among the Shakti Pithas, and the hymn calls her the lamp of Kamarupa and the dweller on Nilakuta, the blue peak.
The three meditation verses come from the Kalika Purana, in its chapter on the greatness of Kamakhya. They show her three-eyed and saffron-coloured, on a red lotus over a corpse (the image of Shiva beneath the Goddess), enthroned on Kamagiri, the hill of Kama.
The hymn calls her Kameshvari, the Lady of Desire, in almost every verse. Verses 10 to 12 describe how that a king who has lost his kingdom regains it by fasting on the eighth, ninth, and fourteenth lunar days.

For an anushthan
An anushthan is a vowed course of recitation. Begin with a sankalpa, water in the right hand, stating the purpose, the daily count, and the number of days. Recite at the same time and place each day, counting on a mala, and keep the count the same. Close with a homa of one tenth of the total (dashamsha), or extra recitation in its place. The hymn itself describes a year of practice with fasts on the eighth, ninth, and fourteenth days (verses 10 and 11). The Guru’s guidance comes first.
