Roughly every twelve years, Nashik keeps an appointment with a planet. The Simhastha fair on the Godavari, held at Nashik and Trimbakeshwar, takes its name from Jupiter’s stay in Leo: siṁhastha means “seated in Leo”. For the coming fair, the Government of Maharashtra has fixed the flag-hoisting for 31 October 2026, the day Jupiter crosses from Cancer into Leo, and the fair’s published schedule sets the flag-lowering for 24 July 2028, the day Jupiter leaves Leo for good. Pilgrims plan around the same dates families now bring to astrologers: when Jupiter enters, when it turns back, and whether a wedding can be fixed while it stays. One sky sets the calendar for both.
Jupiter (♃) enters Leo (Siṁha) at 12:02 Indian Standard Time (IST) on 31 October 2026, and it leaves the sign for the last time at 15:36 IST on 24 July 2028. It does not stay in Leo throughout. It returns to Cancer from 25 January to 26 June 2027 and passes into Virgo from 26 November 2027 to 28 February 2028, so its time in Leo comes in three stays, totalling about 386 days.
Read from the natal Moon (☽), as Varāhamihira does in the Bṛhat Saṁhitā, the transit favours those whose Moon is in Cancer, Aries, Aquarius, Sagittarius, or Libra, when Jupiter passes the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th, or 11th house. For the other seven Moon signs, it calls for patience, and it asks for more than the word “bad” suggests.
Jupiter in Leo Dates: Three Stays, 2026 to 2028
Most dates in circulation list only the first ingress and the last exit, with nothing in between. Yet the sequence between them matters more than either, because Jupiter spends only about three-fifths of these twenty-one months in Leo, and its three stays do not behave alike.
| Event | Date and time (IST, Delhi) | Jupiter’s position |
|---|---|---|
| Enters Leo | 31 October 2026, 12:02 | 0°00′ Leo, Magha |
| Turns retrograde | 13 December 2026, 06:26 | 2°47′ Leo, Magha |
| Returns to Cancer | 25 January 2027, 01:32 | 29°59′ Cancer, Ashlesha |
| Turns direct | 13 April 2027, 07:41 | 22°45′ Cancer, Ashlesha |
| Enters Leo again | 26 June 2027, 05:19 | 0°00′ Leo, Magha |
| Enters Purva Phalguni | 31 August 2027 | 13°20′ Leo |
| Enters Uttara Phalguni | 4 November 2027 | 26°40′ Leo |
| Enters Virgo | 26 November 2027, 18:44 | 0°00′ Virgo, Uttara Phalguni |
| Turns retrograde | 12 January 2028, 14:23 | 3°16′ Virgo, Uttara Phalguni |
| Returns to Leo | 28 February 2028, 19:17 | 29°59′ Leo, Uttara Phalguni |
| Back into Purva Phalguni | 25 March 2028 | 26°40′ Leo |
| Turns direct | 14 May 2028, 01:30 | 23°17′ Leo, Purva Phalguni |
| Uttara Phalguni again | 2 July 2028 | 26°40′ Leo |
| Leaves Leo for Virgo | 24 July 2028, 15:36 | 0°00′ Virgo |
Positions are sidereal, using the Lahiri precession correction (ayanāṁśa) standard in Indian practice.

The first stay lasts 86 days, and Jupiter hardly enters the sign. It moves forward for six weeks, reaches 2°47′ Leo, stands still on 13 December, and slips back into Cancer on 25 January. Throughout its length, it stays in Magha, and on 12 November 2026 it meets Ketu (☋) exactly at 1°18′ Leo, before Ketu crosses into Cancer on 25 November.
The Cancer interval lasts 152 days. Jupiter returns to its sign of exaltation, where Ketu is now waiting, and turns direct at 22°45′ Cancer on 13 April 2027.
The second stay lasts 153 days, and it is the stay most people mean when they say “Jupiter in Leo”. Jupiter moves forward through Magha, Purva Phalguni, and into Uttara Phalguni, then leaves for Virgo on 26 November 2027.
The Virgo interval lasts 94 days, and the third stay lasts 147 days. Jupiter re-enters Leo moving backwards on 28 February 2028, turns direct at 23°17′ Leo on 14 May, and crosses into Virgo for good on 24 July 2028.
The loops have a plain astronomical cause. Earth, moving faster in its inner orbit, overtakes Jupiter about once every thirteen months, and for about four months after each overtaking Jupiter appears to move backwards against the stars: 121 days in 2026 to 2027, 123 days in 2028. Those four months straddle the boundary of Leo twice, so Jupiter enters Leo three times and leaves it three times.
That leaves the question this article sets out to answer. If the first stay is six weeks of forward motion followed by a standstill and a retreat, what does “Jupiter in Leo 2026” actually promise, and to whom? The answer depends less on Leo itself than on where Leo falls from your Moon and which of the three stays you’re living through.

How to Read Jupiter’s Transit From Your Moon
In Vedic astrology, also called Hindu astrology or Jyotiṣa, a transit (gocara) is a planet’s movement through the signs today, read against a person’s birth chart. Varāhamihira counts it from the sign the Moon occupied at birth, the natal Moon sign (janma rāśi), and in the Bṛhat Saṁhitā chapter on planetary transits he gives Jupiter’s results for each of the twelve houses in that order.
His verdicts are short and concrete, and they divide cleanly: five houses bring gain, seven bring trouble of a named kind. The table follows his order, house by house, and names the Moon sign for which Leo falls in each house: Leo is the 1st house from a Leo Moon, the 2nd from a Cancer Moon, the 12th from a Virgo Moon, and so on. Because the count runs forward from the Moon to Leo, the Moon signs run backwards down the table.
| Jupiter in Leo is your… | …if your Moon sign is | What Varāhamihira assigns |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Leo | Loss of money and judgement, a change of place, many quarrels |
| 2nd | Cancer | No enemies; wealth and good company |
| 3rd | Gemini | A change of place; obstacles in work |
| 4th | Taurus | Trouble from relatives; resignation; little delight |
| 5th | Aries | Helpers, prosperity, children, vehicles, gold, property, good qualities |
| 6th | Pisces | A heavy heart; no pleasure even in music, beauty, or children at play |
| 7th | Aquarius | Comfort, good company of the spouse, wealth, good food, fine speech |
| 8th | Capricorn | Confinement, illness, heavy grief, tiring journeys |
| 9th | Sagittarius | Efficiency, influence, children, success, wealth, and grain |
| 10th | Scorpio | A change of place; loss of health and wealth |
| 11th | Libra | Return home; recovery of health and wealth |
| 12th | Virgo | Grief on the journey home |
The list is old, and some of its images belong to Varāhamihira’s world rather than ours: a man of his century measured prosperity in elephants and grain, and the 8th house’s confinement need not mean a prison. The student should translate the images and keep the direction. Mantreśvara follows the same count in the Phaladīpikā and names the same five good houses: the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th, and 11th from the Moon. AstroShala’s article on Moorti Nirnaya explains a second traditional check on transit results.
Obstruction: When a Good Transit Is Held Back
Mantreśvara adds a refinement most printed forecasts omit. Each good house has a point of obstruction (vedha), and when another planet transits that point at the same time, the good result is held back. The full rule exempts two pairs, the Sun (☉) with Saturn (♄) and the Moon with Mercury (☿), which never obstruct each other; neither exemption touches Jupiter. For Jupiter, the pairs are these: the 2nd is obstructed from the 12th, the 5th from the 4th, the 7th from the 3rd, the 9th from the 10th, and the 11th from the 8th.
A Cancer Moon, for example, receives Jupiter in its 2nd house, but whenever another planet walks through Gemini, the 12th from that Moon, the promised gain slows. Fast planets cross such points in days or weeks, while Saturn and the nodes do so in years, so an obstruction by Saturn, or by a node for those who count the nodes, can last a whole stay, while one by the Moon passes in a day or two.
The Moon, the Ascendant, and the Ashtakavarga
The texts count Jupiter’s transit from the Moon, and this article follows them. In AstroShala’s consultations, though, transits read from the rising sign (lagna) often prove more telling, and many practitioners read both. The practical rule is simple: read the section for your Moon sign, then read the section for your ascendant sign, and where the two agree, take the result as stronger.
Parāśara’s system of eight-fold points (aṣṭakavarga) refines both readings. In Jupiter’s own table within your chart, Leo carries between zero and eight points (bindus). Most practitioners treat four as the dividing line: with five or more, the transit through Leo gives more than the house alone promises; with three or fewer, it gives less. A good house with few points delivers modestly, and a difficult house with many points softens.
What the Nadi Texts Add
The Nadi school, as R. G. Rao teaches it from the Bhṛgu Nandi Nāḍī, reads Jupiter’s transit less by house than by contact: as Jupiter moves through a sign, it awakens the natal planets it passes over and those in trine to it, in the 5th and 9th signs from it. During these stays, Jupiter therefore touches whatever you hold natally in Leo, Sagittarius, and Aries, and those placements will often tell you more about the coming months than the house count does.
The Candra Kalā Nāḍī (Deva Keralam) of Achyuta, which R. Santhanam translated in three books, times events in the same spirit, by Jupiter’s arrival in a sign that repeats a position in the natal navamsa (navāṁśa), the ninth divisional chart, which divides each sign into nine parts of 3°20′. For one native of a Taurus ascendant, Jupiter moving through the rising sign marks the start of education, and its arrival in the sign of the navamsa ascendant marks the sacred-thread ceremony (Book III, 3139 to 3140½).
For a native with a Gemini ascendant, Jupiter arriving in the sign of the 2nd lord’s navamsa, in trine to it, or in a sign the 2nd lord aspects, brings a rise in finances (Book III, 5626). Santhanam’s notes treat such dictums as pointing to a general rule: transits over sensitive points of the natal chart carry the weight. In that way, Leo matters more if it is the sign of your navamsa ascendant, or the navamsa held by the lord of a house you care about. Modern writers on the Nadis, including A. V. Sundaram, have carried these contact-based methods into broader practice.
What else shapes your year?
Jupiter’s transit is only half the timing. The dasha you are running sets the year’s themes, and Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu move too. Your Year Ahead Report reads the next twelve months from your dashas and these transits, from your Moon and ascendant, and marks the better months for work, marriage, money, and travel.

Jupiter in Leo by Moon Sign: All Twelve Signs
The three stays answer the article’s question only when read with the two intervals between them, because the intervals reverse the picture for several signs. A Moon sign that dislikes Jupiter in Leo may welcome it in Cancer or Virgo, and the reverse.
| Moon sign | Leo stays (house) | Cancer, Jan to Jun 2027 | Virgo, Nov 2027 to Feb 2028 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 5th, favourable | 4th | 6th |
| Taurus | 4th | 3rd | 5th, favourable |
| Gemini | 3rd | 2nd, favourable | 4th |
| Cancer | 2nd, favourable | 1st | 3rd |
| Leo | 1st | 12th | 2nd, favourable |
| Virgo | 12th | 11th, favourable | 1st |
| Libra | 11th, favourable | 10th | 12th |
| Scorpio | 10th | 9th, favourable | 11th, favourable |
| Sagittarius | 9th, favourable | 8th | 10th |
| Capricorn | 8th | 7th, favourable | 9th, favourable |
| Aquarius | 7th, favourable | 6th | 8th |
| Pisces | 6th | 5th, favourable | 7th, favourable |
Read down the table and one pattern stands out: no Moon sign passes these twenty-one months without a favourable phase. The five signs that welcome Jupiter in Leo find both intervals difficult, and the seven that find Leo hard each gain in at least one interval. That answers the question this article began with. Jupiter in Leo promises something to everyone, but not at the same time, and the stays and intervals decide when.
One rule governs every section below: a transit delivers what the natal chart and the running planetary period (daśā) already promise. A good transit during an empty period gives small things; a hard transit during a strong period chafes but rarely breaks. Read your Moon sign first, then your ascendant sign, and test both against your period before you trust either.
In each section, the houses Jupiter rules are also counted from the Moon sign; counted from your ascendant they will differ, and so will the reading. From Leo, Jupiter also casts full aspects on Sagittarius, Aquarius, and Aries, the 5th, 7th, and 9th signs from it, and each section names the houses those aspects reach for you.
Aries Moon Sign (Mesha Rashi): 5th House
Jupiter passes your 5th house, one of the five Varāhamihira favours, with helpers, prosperity, children, property, and the growth of good qualities. From Leo it aspects your 9th and 11th houses and your Moon sign itself, and as lord of your 9th and 12th it brings fortune and expense in the same hand. The constructive expression is study, a child’s arrival or progress, sound investment judgement, and the counsel of a teacher. The difficult expression is overconfidence, for the 5th is also the house of speculation, and Jupiter’s generosity is easily mistaken for permission.
Watch the obstruction point. The 4th from your Moon is Cancer, and Ketu enters Cancer on 25 November 2026, staying there into 2028. Practitioners who count the nodes for obstruction read your 5th-house gains as slower and harder won for that reason; those who count only the seven planets do not. The Cancer interval puts Jupiter in your 4th, which Varāhamihira reads as trouble from relatives, and the Virgo interval puts it in your 6th. The second stay, from late June to late November 2027, is your longest favourable run, with Jupiter in your 5th house and moving forward throughout.
Taurus Moon Sign (Vrishabha Rashi): 4th House
The 4th is one of the houses Varāhamihira reads as trying: trouble from relatives, a resigned mood, little delight in ordinary things. It is also the house of home, property, vehicles, and schooling, and Jupiter, lord of your 8th and 11th, often brings a property matter or a change of residence that takes longer and costs more than planned. The difficult expression is domestic friction and restlessness without a clear cause; the constructive one is buying, renovating, or settling into a home, and putting a mother’s or elder’s affairs in order.
Jupiter’s aspect on your 10th house from Leo keeps work life steadier than home life, and its aspects on your 8th and 12th favour research, long-term savings, and quiet practice. Your bright patch is the Virgo interval, from 26 November 2027 to 28 February 2028, when Jupiter passes your 5th house. The Cancer interval places it in your 3rd house, with obstacles in work.
Gemini Moon Sign (Mithuna Rashi): 3rd House
Varāhamihira swaps the 3rd house and brings obstacles at work. In practice, this is a transit of forced rather than chosen moves: a transfer, a project that stalls, effort that does not convert into credit. Yet Jupiter in Leo aspects your 7th, 9th, and 11th houses, and it rules your 7th and 10th, so partnerships, mentors, and income may hold even while the daily work frustrates. Constructive expression comes through writing, short courses, purposeful travel, and better terms with siblings and neighbours; the difficult one is spreading effort too thin across too many beginnings.
Your best months fall in the Cancer interval, from 25 January to 26 June 2027, when Jupiter returns to your 2nd house, Varāhamihira’s house of wealth and good company. Plan money decisions for that window rather than for either Leo stay. The Virgo interval places Jupiter in your 4th.
Cancer Moon Sign (Karka Rashi): 2nd House
Jupiter passes your 2nd house, which Varāhamihira reads as freedom from enemies, wealth, and good company. Jupiter rules your 6th and 9th, and from Leo it aspects your 6th, 8th, and 10th houses, so the gains come through work, service, and sometimes through settling a dispute or a debt. The constructive expression is income, savings, family harmony, and persuasive speech; the difficult one is spending as fast as the money arrives and making promises too freely.
Ketu enters your Moon sign on 25 November 2026, and many practitioners read Ketu over the Moon as restlessness and detachment, which can make money and family feel less important than they are. Your obstruction point is Gemini, the 12th from your Moon. The Sun crosses Gemini from about mid-June to mid-July each year, so the opening weeks of the second stay begin more slowly than the rest. In the Cancer interval, Jupiter returns over your Moon, and in the Virgo interval it passes your 3rd.
Leo Moon Sign (Simha Rashi): 1st House
Varāhamihira is blunt about Jupiter over the natal Moon: loss of money and judgement, a change of place, and many quarrels. This is clear in practice: Jupiter expands whatever it touches, and over the Moon it expands certainty, so commitments, spending, and opinions all outgrow their support. Yet Jupiter in Leo aspects your 5th, 7th, and 9th houses, all three good houses, and it rules your 5th and 8th. The constructive expression is visibility, a teaching or advisory role, learning, and faith renewed; the difficult one is overreach and the quarrels that follow from being sure.
During the first stay, Ketu also sits in Leo until 25 November 2026, and a Moon in the first few degrees of Leo receives both at once: a time for questions rather than declarations. The Cancer interval places Jupiter in your 12th, which brings expense and travel. The Virgo interval, from 26 November 2027 to 28 February 2028, is your clearest window, with Jupiter in your 2nd house.
Virgo Moon Sign (Kanya Rashi): 12th House
The 12th brings grief on the journey home, in Varāhamihira’s words, and in modern terms, expense, tiring travel, broken sleep, and distance from one’s own people. Jupiter, lord of your 4th and 7th, aspects your 4th, 6th, and 8th houses from Leo. The constructive expression belongs to the 12th’s other side: pilgrimage, retreat, charity, residence abroad, and spiritual practice that finally finds its time. For a Virgo Moon, a journey to the Simhastha itself fits the transit literally. The difficult expression is money leaking through the household and through partners.
Your best months come in the Cancer interval, from 25 January to 26 June 2027, when Jupiter passes your 11th house, the house of recovery and gain. From 26 November 2027 to 28 February 2028, Jupiter passes over your Moon sign, an early preview of Jupiter’s transit through Virgo from July 2028.
Libra Moon Sign (Tula Rashi): 11th House
The 11th is the last of Varāhamihira’s good houses for Jupiter: return home, and recovery of health and wealth. Jupiter aspects your 3rd, 5th, and 7th houses, so children, creative work, and partnership all draw on the same support. The caution lies in rulership: for a Libra Moon, Jupiter rules the 3rd and 6th houses, and gains under a 6th-house lord often come with obligations, a loan, a contract with conditions, or a win in a contest that must be defended. The constructive expression is income, friends, elder siblings, and fulfilled wishes; the difficult one is taking on debt because things feel good.
Your obstruction point is Taurus, the 8th from your Moon. The Cancer interval places Jupiter in your 10th, which Varāhamihira reads as a change of place and loss of health and wealth, so expect pressure at work from late January to late June 2027. The Virgo interval places it in your 12th.
Scorpio Moon Sign (Vrischika Rashi): 10th House
Varāhamihira reads the 10th as a change of place and loss of health and wealth. In practice, this shows as reshuffles at work: a transfer, a new superior, or a role redefined without your asking. But Jupiter rules your 2nd and 5th houses, two of the best lordships it can hold for a Scorpio Moon, and in the 10th it can build status on knowledge, through a role that teaches, advises, or judges. From Leo, it aspects your 2nd, 4th, and 6th houses. The difficult expression is disagreement with authority and fatigue from carrying more responsibility than reward; the constructive one is a public role that finally matches your learning.
For you, the intervals are the good stretches. In the Cancer interval, Jupiter passes your 9th house, and in the Virgo interval, your 11th, both among Varāhamihira’s favoured houses. Plan applications and launches for those two windows.
Sagittarius Moon Sign (Dhanu Rashi): 9th House
Jupiter rules your Moon sign and transits your 9th house, which Varāhamihira credits with efficiency, influence, children, success, wealth, and grain. From Leo, it trines your Moon sign, along with your 3rd and 5th houses. The constructive expression is fortune, the support of a father or teacher, higher study, long journeys, and a renewed sense of purpose. The difficult expression is the preacher’s fault, certainty that hardens into self-righteousness, for the 9th is the house of doctrine.
Your obstruction point is Virgo, the 10th from your Moon; the Sun crosses Virgo from about mid-September to mid-October, slowing the gains of those weeks in the second stay. The Cancer interval, from 25 January to 26 June 2027, places Jupiter in your 8th, the hardest phase of the transit for you, and the Virgo interval places it in your 10th.
Capricorn Moon Sign (Makara Rashi): 8th House
Varāhamihira’s reading of the 8th is the hardest in his list: confinement, illness, heavy grief, and tiring journeys. Read it as a period of delays, obligations, and strain rather than a sentence. Jupiter rules your 3rd and 12th houses, and from Leo it aspects your 12th, 2nd, and 4th, which protects family and home. The constructive expression belongs to the 8th’s hidden side: research, inheritance, insurance, and the study of the occult. The difficult expression is health strain and tangled paperwork. Keep up routine health checks, and take any symptom to your physician, not to your horoscope.
Rahu (☊) enters Capricorn on 25 November 2026, adding restlessness over the Moon. Your relief lies in the intervals: the Cancer interval places Jupiter in your 7th house and the Virgo interval in your 9th, both favoured by Varāhamihira.
Aquarius Moon Sign (Kumbha Rashi): 7th House
Jupiter passes through your 7th house, where Varāhamihira promises comfort, good company from your spouse, wealth, good food, and fine speech. For an Aquarius Moon, Jupiter rules the 2nd and 11th houses, both houses of wealth, and from Leo it aspects your Moon sign, your 11th, and your 3rd. The constructive expression is marriage, partnership, contracts, and dealings with the public; the difficult one is leaning on partners for what you should carry yourself, and agreements signed in a hurry.
Your obstruction point is Aries, the 3rd from your Moon. The Sun crosses Aries from 13 April to 14 May 2028, during the third stay, so it’s better to sign contracts outside those weeks. The Cancer interval places Jupiter in your 6th and the Virgo interval in your 8th, so the second stay is your main window.
Pisces Moon Sign (Meena Rashi): 6th House
Varāhamihira describes Jupiter in the 6th as a heavy heart that finds no pleasure even in music, beauty, or children at play. Jupiter rules your Moon sign and your 10th, so the transit takes the self into the house of work, service, competition, and debt. From Leo, it aspects your 10th, 12th, and 2nd. The constructive expression is winning a contest, clearing a loan, or doing service that builds standing; the difficult one is low spirits, a workload that does not lift, and disputes with colleagues. If the heaviness settles into a lasting low mood, talk to someone you trust or a doctor.
The intervals favour you. The Cancer interval, from 25 January to 26 June 2027, places Jupiter in your 5th house, and the Virgo interval, from 26 November 2027 to 28 February 2028, places it in your 7th, both among Varāhamihira’s good houses.
How will Jupiter in Leo read for you?
A Moon-sign reading is where a transit begins. Your ascendant, the houses Jupiter rules in your chart, and the dasha you are running decide how much of it you actually see. The Jupiter Transit Report reads the transit from your own chart, answers one question you send with your order, and marks the periods that need care, including the retrograde months.
One question on your mind? Ask A Question.
What Jupiter Does in Leo
Behind the house-by-house results lies the question of what kind of guest Jupiter is in Leo, because a planet’s dignity in a sign modifies the results. However, it never overturns Varāhamihira’s results.
Jupiter, the Sun, and a Friend’s Sign
Parāśara counts the Sun among Jupiter’s natural friends, and Jupiter among the Sun’s, so the permanent scheme of planetary friendship (naisargika maitrī) makes them mutual friends, and Jupiter in Leo sits in a friend’s sign.
This is a step down from its present months in Cancer, the sign where Jupiter is exalted (ucca), most of all at 5° of that sign; and a planet leaving its exaltation for a friend’s house resembles a minister moving from his own office into an ally’s, still welcome and still effective, but no longer master of the room. Jupiter’s own signs are Sagittarius and Pisces, and its root triangle (mūlatrikoṇa), the portion in which Parāśara holds it most reliable in its own nature, runs from 0° to 10° Sagittarius.
Jupiter casts full aspects on the 5th, 7th, and 9th houses counted from itself. From Leo, these fall on Sagittarius, Aquarius, and Aries. The student should note that Sagittarius receives the aspect of its own lord, which practitioners read as protectisign’s that sign’s affairs; that Aquarius, a sign of Saturn, receives it across the opposition; and that Aries, the sign of Mars (♂︎), receives it as the ninth from Leo, the house of fortune counted from the planet’s seat.
Jupiter as Jiva: The Living Self in the Sun’s House
Among Jupiter’s names, Jīva, “the living one”, carries the most weight in a reading. The Amarakośa lists it among Bṛhaspati’s names, and the hymn to Bṛhaspati recited in many households opens by naming him Guru, Bṛhaspati, and Jīva together. As significator (kāraka) of the jīva, Jupiter stands for the living self in every chart, as much for a woman as for a man.
Parāśara classifies Jupiter as a male planet, and that classification governs how the texts use planetary gender. It does not reach the jīva itself. The Upanishads teach that the self within the body is one with Brahman, in the great saying of the Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad, ahaṁ brahmāsmi, “I am Brahman”; and the Śvetāśvatara Upaniṣad says plainly that this self is neither woman, nor man, nor neuter, but takes whichever body it enters. Read as Jīva, then, Jupiter has no gender, because what it signifies is the one self present in everyone.
Leo belongs to the Sun, and Parāśara names the Sun as the soul (ātmā) of the Cosmic Person (kālapuruṣa), with the Moon as his mind. Leo is also the fifth sign of the natural zodiac, and the fifth house is where the texts look for intelligence, mantra, and, in common reading, the merit carried from former lives. AstroShala reads Jupiter’s passage through Leo in that light: for these months, the significator of the living self lodges in the house of the soul. This is an interpretation rather than a verse, and it changes none of the house-by-house results above; it describes the kind of growth those results serve.
Magha, Purva Phalguni, and Uttara Phalguni
Leo holds parts of three lunar mansions (nakṣatra), each one of 27 divisions of 13°20′, and Jupiter’s stays fall unevenly across them.

| Magha | 0°00′ to 13°20′ Leo | Ketu ☋ | The ancestors (Pitṛs) | A throne | 31 October 2026 to 25 January 2027; 26 June to 31 August 2027 |
| Purva Phalguni | 13°20′ to 26°40′ Leo | Venus ♀︎ | Bhaga, giver of shares and marital happiness | Front legs of a bed | 31 August to 4 November 2027; 25 March to 2 July 2028 |
| Uttara Phalguni | 26°40′ Leo to 10°00′ Virgo | Sun ☉ | Aryaman, keeper of contracts and hospitality | Back legs of a bed | 4 November 2027 to 25 March 2028, Virgo interval included; 2 to 24 July 2028 |
Jupiter spends its first stay wholly in Magha, the asterism of the ancestors, and in the company of Ketu, Magha’s own lord. The two Phalgunīs, whose deities preside over the bed, the share, and the marriage alliance, receive Jupiter only in the second and third stays. That is one reason why weddings planned for late 2027 and 2028 call for a closer look than those planned for this winter, a question taken up in the section on Simhastha.
Pushkara Navamsa: Jupiter’s Nourishing Degrees in Leo
Certain of the nine navamsa parts of each sign are called puṣkara navāṁśa, the nourishing divisions. Lists differ between authorities. R. Santhanam, in his notes to the Candra Kalā Nāḍī, gives a single nourishing division for Leo, the Libra navamsa, which runs from 20°00′ to 23°20′ Leo, and adds that no planet in a Leo navamsa can hold this dignity. Another common list gives fire signs two such divisions, adding the Sagittarius navamsa from 26°40′ to 30°00′.
The Candra Kalā Nāḍī uses the nourishing division for natal Jupiter: in one dictum, Jupiter there with the right supporting conditions gives fortune throughout life. Applying it to the transit is another inference, and it is labelled as such.
On Santhanam’s list, transiting Jupiter crosses Leo’s nourishing division in the second stay, from 1 to 17 October 2027, and returns to its edge as the third stay’s turning point: it stations direct on 14 May 2028 at 23°17′ Leo, three minutes of arc inside the band, and stays inside it until 19 May. On the wider list, it also stands in the Sagittarius navamsa, its own, from 4 to 26 November 2027, from 28 February to 25 March 2028, and from 2 to 24 July 2028.
Jupiter at the Cancer and Leo Gandanta
What follows is an inference, and it is labelled as one. The doctrine of the junction (gaṇḍānta) applies to the Moon at birth, the rising sign, the lunar day, and choosing a moment for an action. No classical text cited in this article applies to the slow planet’s transit. The reasoning is offered because the geometry is exact, and the reader is entitled to see it.
Cancer ends, and Leo begins at the very point where Ashlesha ends, and Magha begins. It is one of only three places in the zodiac where a sign boundary and an asterism boundary coincide, because nine asterisms of 13°20′ fill exactly four signs of 30°. At each junction, a water sign gives way to a fire sign, and the six asterisms bordering the three junctions form the gaṇḍamūla group, as set out in AstroShala’s guide to the gandamoola nakshatra.
On the Cancer side stands Ashlesha, ruled by Mercury, with the serpents (sarpas) as its deity and a coiled serpent as its symbol. On the Leo side stands Magha, ruled by Ketu, with the ancestors as its deity and a throne as its symbol. Jupiter crosses from the coil to the throne on 31 October 2026, returns on 25 January 2027, and moves forward one final time on 26 June 2027. Its first retrograde station, at 2°47′ Leo on 13 December, falls within the junction band most practitioners draw, from the last quarter of Ashlesha to the first quarter of Magha (26°40′ Cancer to 3°20′ Leo).
Symbolically, the teacher of the gods stands still between two kinds of knowledge: the coiled, guarded lore of the serpents and the seated authority of the sage. AstroShala’s reading is that the first stay suits completing and consolidating rather than beginning. The timing points the same way on its own account, since Jupiter covers less than three degrees of Leo before it turns back.
The junction is not foreign ground to Jupiter. Its root triangle, 0° to 10° Sagittarius, lies wholly inside Mula, the first asterism after the junction of Scorpio and Sagittarius, ruled by Ketu, with Nirṛti, the goddess of dissolution, as its deity, and a bundle of roots tied together as its symbol. Jupiter’s other sign, Pisces, closes with Revati, the asterism that ends the zodiac at the third junction. Two of the three junctions therefore touch Jupiter’s own signs, and the third, at the close of Cancer, borders its sign of exaltation: the one it is about to cross.
Jupiter and Ketu Together: Leo and Cancer, 2026 to 2027
Ketu, the Moon’s south node, has been moving backwards through Magha, its own asterism, for months. Jupiter meets it exactly on 12 November 2026 at 11:09 IST, both at 1°18′ Leo, and Ketu leaves for Cancer on 25 November at 17:46 IST. (These are true-node positions; the mean node gives Ketu’s ingress some days later.) The pairing in Leo therefore lasts 25 days. It does not end there; when Jupiter falls back into Cancer on 25 January 2027, it finds Ketu again, and the two share Cancer until Jupiter leaves on 26 June 2027.
People often confuse this pairing with Guru Caṇḍāla yoga, but that name belongs to Jupiter with Rahu, not Ketu. Parāśara’s rule for the nodes, śanivat rāhu kujavat ketu, makes Ketu act like Mars, and in practice Jupiter with Ketu is read as learning turned inward: toward ritual, study for its own sake, and the ancestors whom Magha honours. The difficult expression is withdrawal from the work at hand, distrust of teachers and institutions, and sincere but out-of-season advice.
The constructive expression is study, research, and spiritual practice that go further than they otherwise would; many practitioners see the pairing as a person who is markedly spiritual in their own way, often outside formal religion. Which one prevails depends, as always, on the natal chart: Jupiter’s dignity and the house it rules from your Moon and ascendant decide it, not the conjunction itself.
The Nadi texts read the pairing more variously still. The Candra Kalā Nāḍī gives it both expressions, depending on the rest of the chart: in one dictum, for a native of a fixed ascendant, Ketu with Jupiter in the rising sign, while their dispositor stands with the Moon, forms Kusuma yoga, a combination for prosperity (Book III, 3534 to 3538). Elsewhere, the same text attaches harder results to the pairing in other divisions. The text never reads the conjunction alone, and neither should the student.
Two Charts With Jupiter and Ketu Together
Two Prime Ministers of India were born with Jupiter and Ketu together, one in Leo itself.
Manmohan Singh was born on 26 September 1932 at Gah, in the Punjab, now in Pakistan; no reliable birth time is recorded, so this chart is read by sign alone and no house is claimed. By the Lahiri correction, Jupiter stood at about 17° Leo and Ketu at about 24° Leo, both in Purva Phalguni, the asterism ruled by Venus.
Jupiter in a friend’s sign, with Ketu pulling its learning inward, describes the scholar rather than the showman, and his life followed that line: an economist trained at Cambridge and Oxford who rose to Finance Minister in 1991 and Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, and who was known throughout for personal austerity rather than display. He died on 26 December 2024.
Jawaharlal Nehru was born on 14 November 1889 at 23:00 local time at Allahabad, now Prayagraj, by the birth time in AstroShala’s verified record (some published sources give 23:30). By the Lahiri correction, Cancer rose at 23°42′, and the Moon stood in the ascendant at 17°54′ Cancer, the highest degree within its sign among the seven planets from the Sun to Saturn. In Jaimini’s scheme of variable significators fixed by degree (chara-kāraka), as distinct from the natural significators, the Moon is his soul significator (ātmakāraka) on the seven-planet count AstroShala follows.
On the eight-planet chara-kāraka count, Rahu at 11°26′ Gemini counts as 30° less than that degree, 18°34′, and would take the role instead. Jupiter stood at 15°10′ Sagittarius, in its own sign, and Ketu at 11°26′ Sagittarius, both in the 6th house. The ascendant and the Moon both fall in Ashlesha, and Ketu in Mula: three placements in gaṇḍamūla asterisms, at the two junctions that bracket this transit’s story.

The timing bears the reading out. For a Cancer ascendant, Jupiter rules the 6th and 9th houses, the house of the father, long journeys, and higher learning; and Ketu, exalted in Scorpio, is powerful in Sagittarius, as Rahu is in Gemini, so the pair sits there in strength. Counted from his Moon, Nehru’s Ketu planetary period ran from April 1905 to April 1912.
In May 1905 he sailed for England, to Harrow, then Trinity College, Cambridge, for a degree in natural science, and from 1910 the Inner Temple in London, where he read law because his father wished him to join the family practice: the 9th lord choosing through the father, and Ketu leaving him, as he later described those years, drifting rather than engaged.
He passed his bar examinations, in his own words, “with neither glory nor ignominy”, and returned to India in August 1912, four months into Venus’s period, which in his chart sits in the 4th house, the house of the homeland. Years later he wrote that those seven years had left him a mixture of East and West, at home nowhere: Ketu’s signature in a single sentence.
The 6th house is the house of contest. Nehru’s Jupiter, strong in its own sign there and joined by Ketu in Nirṛti’s asterism, describes a life in which the struggle itself became the occasion for study: across nine detentions he spent more than nine years in British prisons, and he wrote Glimpses of World History and The Discovery of India there.
Long known as an agnostic who kept religion apart from the business of the state, he said late in life, in conversations with R. K. Karanjia reported in 1961, that he had changed, and that the old Hindu idea of a divine essence in every individual appealed to him. Jupiter with Ketu describes a spirituality of his own, owing little to ritual.
Simhastha Guru: Can You Marry When Jupiter Is in Leo?
Families planning a wedding this winter often hear two answers from two priests: either that no date is possible while Jupiter is in Leo, or that the restriction doesn’t apply where they live. Both answers come from the same text, the Muhūrta Cintāmaṇi of Rāma Daivajña, the standard manual for choosing a time (muhūrta). The difference lies in how far each reads, because the rule is not one verse but four, and each later verse qualifies the one before.
The first verse states the prohibition in its widest form. Whatever is forbidden while Jupiter is combust is forbidden also while Jupiter, here called Jīva, stands in Leo or in Capricorn:
Muhūrta Cintāmaṇi 1.48
aste varjyaṁ siṁhanakrasthajīve varjyaṁ kecid vakrage cāticāre |
gurvāditye viśvaghasre’pi pakṣe procus tadvad dantaratnādibhūṣām ||48||
Meaning: What is to be avoided when Jupiter is combust is to be avoided when Jīva stands in Leo or Capricorn. Some forbid it also when he is retrograde or moving too fast, when Jupiter and the Sun are together, and in a fortnight of thirteen days; they say the same of ornaments of ivory and gems.
Read alone, this verse closes every Leo stay to weddings, and that is the reading of the astrologers who advise against marrying at all while Jupiter is in Leo. It also explains why some of them add the retrograde months: the verse records that view, though only as the opinion of “some”. Rāma Daivajña does not stop there. The next verse narrows the rule twice, by degree and by region:
Muhūrta Cintāmaṇi 1.49
siṁhe gurau siṁhalave vivāho neṣṭo’tha godottarataś ca yāvat |
bhāgīrathīyāmyataṭaṁ hi doṣo nānyatra deśe tapane’pi meṣe ||49||
Meaning: With Jupiter in Leo and in the Leo navamsa, marriage is not desired. And from the north of the Godāvarī up to the southern bank of the Bhāgīrathī there is a fault; not in any other land, nor when the Sun is in Aries.
The third and fourth verses fix the boundaries exactly:
Muhūrta Cintāmaṇi 1.50 to 51
maghādipañcapādeṣu guruḥ sarvatra ninditaḥ |
gaṅgāgodāntaraṁ hitvā śeṣāṅghriṣu na doṣakṛt ||50||
meṣe’rke san vratodvāhau gaṅgāgodāntare’pi ca |
sarvaḥ siṁhagurur varjyaḥ kaliṅge gauḍagurjare ||51||
Meaning: In the five quarters beginning with Maghā, Jupiter is censured everywhere. In the remaining quarters he causes no fault, except in the land between the Gaṅgā and the Godāvarī. With the Sun in Aries, the sacred-thread ceremony and marriage are proper even between the Gaṅgā and the Godāvarī. In Kaliṅga, Gauḍa, and Gurjara, the whole of Jupiter’s stay in Leo is to be avoided.
The five quarters beginning with Magha are the four quarters of Magha and the first of Purva Phalguni, from 0° to 16°40′ Leo. The Leo navamsa named in verse 49, from 13°20′ to 16°40′ Leo, lies at their end. So the text draws three zones. In the first 16°40′ of Leo, Jupiter forbids weddings everywhere. Beyond 16°40′, the fault holds only in the land between the two rivers, and even there it lifts while the Sun is in Aries. In Kaliṅga (coastal Odisha and the northern Andhra coast), Gauḍa (Bengal), and Gurjara (Gujarat), Jupiter avoids the whole of its stay in Leo, Sun in Aries or not.
The land between the Gaṅgā and the Godāvarī is the heart of India. Today it covers Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, and G. C. Sharma, in his notes to the translation, extends it to Rajasthan, northern Maharashtra, and parts of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Odisha. The Godāvarī named in the verse is the same river on whose banks the Nashik Simhastha opens on 31 October, and Ujjain’s own Simhastha, due in 2028, keeps its main bathing day on the full moon of Vaiśākha, in April or May, when the Sun stands in Aries. The table below sets out the text’s rule phase by phase; it does not choose a wedding date.
| Period | Jupiter’s range in Leo over the period | Most of India | Between the Ganga and Godavari | Kalinga, Gauda, Gujarat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 31 October 2026 to 25 January 2027 | 0° to 2°47′ (Magha) | Avoided | Avoided | Avoided |
| 26 June to 15 September 2027 | 0° to 16°40′ | Avoided | Avoided | Avoided |
| 15 September to 26 November 2027 | 16°40′ to 30°00′ | No Simhastha fault | Avoided | Avoided |
| 28 February to 13 April, and 14 May to 24 July 2028 (Sun not in Aries) | 23°17′ to 30°00′ | No Simhastha fault | Avoided | Avoided |
| 13 April to 14 May 2028 (Sun in Aries) | 23°17′ to 26°40′ | No Simhastha fault | Permitted | Avoided |
The degree column gives the span Jupiter covers during each period, not its position on the first date.
Two cautions apply above the table. Verse 48’s harder readers also avoid retrograde Jupiter, and Jupiter stays retrograde until 01:30 IST on 14 May 2028, while the Sun leaves Aries at 18:35 IST the same day, so for them the Sun-in-Aries window shrinks to those seventeen hours. And Jupiter is combust from 17 August to 14 September 2027, the weeks when the Sun shares Leo with it, which verse 48 excludes on two counts; no ceremony belongs in that month.
The commentary to the translation also quotes the Jyotirnibandha on the other side: a bride married while Jupiter is in Leo and the Sun is in Aries will be virtuous, truthful, and endowed with jewels, happiness, and fame. Another view records Jupiter in Leo as faulty only when the full moon of the month of Māgha falls in Maghā. None of these rules chooses a date by itself. The couple’s own charts, Jupiter’s strength counted from the bride’s Moon, and the day’s panchang still decide the muhūrta, and so does the place: a wedding in Bengaluru and one in Bhopal fall under different verses.
Planning a wedding in these years?
No rule about Simhastha chooses a wedding date by itself. Our Auspicious Muhurta report chooses the date and time from the day’s panchang, the rising sign, and the strength of the day for your own birth star, for a marriage, engagement, or other event you name.

Remedies and Mantras for Jupiter
Remedies come last because they answer the reading, not the transit. A good transit needs nothing but use; a hard one calls for steadiness first, and worship second. When a reading calls for propitiation, the texts give first place to Jupiter’s own hymns and mantra, recited with attention, and the priestly manuals, not a classical verse, set the full course for Jupiter at 19,000 repetitions, counted on a rosary (see the japa mala for Jupiter). Practitioners hold that a smaller, regular practice kept on Thursdays (Guruvāra) is, for most people, a more practical start than one large rite.
The oldest hymns to Bṛhaspati are Vedic. In Ṛgveda 4.50, Vāmadeva praises the god who with his roar held apart the ends of the earth, whom the ancient seers set at their head. In Ṛgveda 7.97, Vasiṣṭha calls on Bṛhaspati together with Indra. Ṛgveda 2.23 is the hymn of Gṛtsamada, and its last verse is the mantra recited for Jupiter in the worship of the nine planets.
Ṛgveda 2.23.15
बृहस्पते अति यदर्यो अर्हाद्द्युमद्विभाति क्रतुमज्जनेषु ।
यद्दीदयच्छवस ऋतप्रजात तदस्मासु द्रविणं धेहि चित्रम् ॥१५॥
bṛhaspate ati yad aryo arhād dyumad vibhāti kratumaj janeṣu |
yad dīdayac chavasa ṛtaprajāta tad asmāsu draviṇaṁ dhehi citram ||15||
Meaning: O Bṛhaspati, born of the cosmic order, the wealth that surpasses what the worthy deserve, that shines with splendour and wise purpose among peoples, that blazes with strength: place that wonderful wealth in us.
The Vedic text includes accent marks, omitted here for readability. Some printings join śavasa and ṛtaprajāta as śavasartaprajāta. The commentator Sāyaṇa takes the “wealth” of the last line to mean more than money, and many reciters use the verse as a prayer for the radiance of learning.
The seed-syllable (bīja) mantra is the form most households use for daily repetition. It comes from the priestly manuals rather than a classical verse:
Jupiter’s bija mantra (common practice)
ॐ ग्रां ग्रीं ग्रौं सः गुरवे नमः
oṁ grāṁ grīṁ grauṁ saḥ gurave namaḥ
Meaning: Oṁ; grāṁ, grīṁ, grauṁ, saḥ, the seed syllables of Jupiter; salutation to the Guru.
The verse for Jupiter in the Navagraha Stotra, the hymn to the nine planets ascribed to Vyāsa, is the one most often recited at the end of daily worship:
Navagraha Stotra, verse for Jupiter (ascribed to Vyāsa)
देवानां च ऋषीणां च गुरुं काञ्चनसन्निभम् ।
बुद्धिभूतं त्रिलोकेशं तं नमामि बृहस्पतिम् ॥
devānāṁ ca ṛṣīṇāṁ ca guruṁ kāñcanasaṁnibham |
buddhibhūtaṁ trilokeśaṁ taṁ namāmi bṛhaspatim ||
Meaning: I bow to Bṛhaspati, teacher of the gods and the sages, gleaming like gold, intelligence itself, lord of the three worlds.
Many printings read buddhimantaṁ, “the wise one”, in place of buddhibhūtaṁ, “intelligence itself”.
Most households recite the Bṛhaspati Stotra on Thursdays, and its colophon assigns it to the Skanda Purāṇa. Its first line names Jupiter as Guru, Bṛhaspati, and Jīva in one breath, and its closing verses describe the Thursday worship itself. The Skanda Purāṇa also tells, in its Prabhāsa Khaṇḍa, of a shrine of Śiva as Bṛhaspatīśvara, whose worship relieves the affliction of an adverse Jupiter.

Meaning: Of this hymn to Bṛhaspati, Gṛtsamada is the seer, anuṣṭubh the metre, and Bṛhaspati the deity; it is recited for Bṛhaspati’s pleasure. (1) Guru, Bṛhaspati, Jīva, teacher of the gods, best of the learned; lord of speech, the wise one, long-bearded, clad in yellow, ever young. (2) Whose glance is nectar, lord of the planets, remover of planetary affliction; compassionate, gentle in form, worshipped by the gods, radiant as a bud. (3) Revered by the world, teacher of the world, knower and maker of right conduct; husband of Tārā, descendant of Aṅgiras, known through the Veda, the grandfather.
(4) Whoever remembers Bṛhaspati with devotion and recites these names becomes free of illness, strong, prosperous, and blessed with sons. (5) That mortal lives a hundred years, and his sin is destroyed, destroyed, who worships Guru on his day with yellow perfume, unbroken rice, and cloth. (6) When Bṛhaspati is worshipped with flowers, lamps, and offerings, and Brahmins are fed, Guru’s affliction is pacified.
The promises in verses 4 to 6 are the hymn’s own, as is usual in a hymn’s closing verses; they describe the tradition’s hope for the practice, not a guarantee.
The household practices that accompany these mantras are custom rather than text: wearing yellow on Thursdays, offering turmeric or chickpea lentils, and giving to teachers and students, since Jupiter is the planet of the guru. A gemstone is a different matter. Yellow sapphire strengthens Jupiter for good or ill, and it suits only a chart in which Jupiter is a benefic for the ascendant; read the gemstones in Vedic astrology guide and have the chart checked before buying. No remedy guarantees a result, and no transit calls for repeated paid rituals; the tradition asks for one sincere course of practice.

Frequently Asked Questions
When does Jupiter enter Leo in 2026? Jupiter enters Leo at 12:02 IST on 31 October 2026. It returns to Cancer on 25 January 2027, re-enters Leo on 26 June 2027, spends 26 November 2027 to 28 February 2028 in Virgo, and leaves Leo for good on 24 July 2028.
Is Jupiter in Leo good or bad? It depends on your Moon sign and ascendant. In Hindu astrology, Jupiter in Leo is in a friend’s sign, and Varāhamihira gives it good results from the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th, and 11th houses from the Moon, and difficult ones from the other seven.
Which Moon signs benefit from Jupiter in Leo? Cancer, Aries, Aquarius, Sagittarius, and Libra benefit during the Leo stays. The other seven each have at least one favourable phase: Gemini and Virgo in the Cancer interval, Taurus and Leo in the Virgo interval, and Scorpio, Capricorn, and Pisces in both.
Can I get married while Jupiter is in Leo? It depends on Jupiter’s degree and where you live. The Muhūrta Cintāmaṇi bars weddings everywhere while Jupiter is in the first 16°40′ of Leo, which covers the first stay and the second stay until 15 September 2027. Beyond that point, the bar holds only between the Ganga and Godavari, where it lifts while the Sun is in Aries, and in Kalinga, Bengal, and Gujarat. Regional customs differ, and the final date still depends on the couple’s charts and the panchang.
Should I read Jupiter’s transit from my Moon sign or my ascendant? Read both. Classical texts count from the natal Moon, but many practitioners, including AstroShala, find the ascendant reading more telling in practice.
What does Jupiter conjunct Ketu mean in transit? It turns Jupiter’s learning inward, toward study, ritual, and spiritual questions. The pairing lasts in Leo only until 25 November 2026, then resumes in Cancer from 25 January to 26 June 2027.
What is the mantra for Jupiter? The common bija mantra is oṁ grāṁ grīṁ grauṁ saḥ gurave namaḥ. The Vedic mantra is the last verse of Ṛgveda 2.23, and the Skanda Purāṇa hymn to Bṛhaspati is widely recited on Thursdays.
