About this text
This hymn opens the eighth chapter of the Mundamala Tantra, a Shakta text in dialogue between Shiva and Parvati. Parvati asks for “the secret of Kalika and of Tara” (verse 2); Shiva says no tongue could tell Kali’s greatness (verses 3 to 5), then gives her hundred names (verses 7 to 21).
Nearly every name begins with क, the first letter of Kali’s own name: Karalavadana, Kamini, Kamala, Kalaratri, Kulaja, Kameshvari. Many refer to the Kula path of Tantric worship and its rites.
Verses 22 to 34 give the fruits: freedom from fear, attainment of the mantra, and the reward of countless purashcharanas. The chapter goes on to praise the Tantra itself; the download ends at verse 34, where the hymn’s own fruits end.

How it is recited
Recite it once a day, best at night, after a short prayer to Kali; many choose Tuesdays, the new moon, and Kali Puja. The names that refer to Kaula offerings and rites are translated as the text gives them; the hymn itself says recitation alone is enough (verse 25).

For an anushthan
An anushthan is a vowed course of recitation. Begin with a sankalpa, water in the right hand, stating the purpose, the daily count, and the number of days. Recite at the same time and place each day, counting on a mala, and keep the count the same. Close with a homa of one tenth of the total (dashamsha), or extra recitation in its place. The text itself speaks of reciting it a hundred times for attainment in the mantra (verse 34), at night on a Tuesday falling on the fourteenth (verse 29). The Guru’s guidance comes first.

The chapter continues past verse 34 and has no closing line at that point; the closing line here marks where the hymn ends. Verse 16 is obscure in every source seen; its meaning gives the general sense.
