About this text

The hymn belongs to a story in the Uttara Kanda of the Ramcharitmanas. Kakabhushundi, in an earlier life, stayed seated in arrogance when his kind Guru entered a Shiva temple. A voice from the shrine cursed him to become a serpent. His Guru, grieving for him, folded his hands and sang these eight verses to calm Shiva, and Shiva softened the curse.

So the Rudrashtakam is a guru’s prayer for his student. It moves from Shiva beyond all form (verses 1 and 2), to his visible form with the Ganga, the crescent moon, and the blue throat (verses 3 and 4), to the plea of verse 8: “I know no yoga, no japa, no worship; I only bow to you.”

Tulsidas wrote it in the Bhujangaprayata metre, whose lines move like a gliding serpent; the closing verse is in the ordinary shloka metre.

How it is recited

Recite it once a day, morning or evening, before a Shiva image or linga, or simply in the heart; many recite it on Mondays, in the month of Shravana, and on Mahashivaratri. Verse 8 asks for no technique, only sincerity, and that is the spirit in which it is recited.

I worship him who rests in his own being, beyond qualities and distinctions and free of desire: consciousness vast as the sky, who wears the sky as his garment.

Meaning: He is formless, the root of Om, the fourth state beyond waking, dream, and sleep. Speech, understanding, and the senses cannot reach him; he is the Lord, the lord of Kailasa. He is terrible, the death even of Mahakala, and yet merciful; he is the home of every virtue, beyond the world of birth and death. To him I bow.

Verse 7

Verse 9

Meaning: The Brahmin spoke this Rudrashtaka to please Hara. Shambhu is gracious to those who recite it with devotion.

For an anushthan

An anushthan is a vowed course of recitation. Begin with a sankalpa, water in the right hand, stating the purpose, the daily count, and the number of days. Recite at the same time and place each day, counting on a mala, and keep the count the same. Close with a homa of one tenth of the total (dashamsha), or extra recitation in its place. The Guru’s guidance comes first.
