About this text

This hymn pictures Narasimha at the moment he came out of the pillar: his roar, his mane scattering the clouds, his claws, his ornaments, and his weapons. It is a showpiece of sound: some verses ring with one consonant again and again (verse 8 with “ṭh”, verse 13 with “bh”), and verse 17 is almost pure sound, “caṭa caṭa caṭa”, “kaḍi kaḍi kaḍi”.

The printed collection gives it as the work of Narayana Panditacharya, son of Trivikrama Panditacharya, the disciple of Sri Madhvacharya; many reciters credit Trivikrama himself. Verse 21 names the author only as “the son of the ornament of the Likucha family”, which fits either reading.

The “enemy” of the refrain is read in the Madhva tradition first as the inner enemy, desire, greed, and the rest (verse 21), and the hymn asks in the end for compassion and the lasting vision of God (verse 19).

How it is recited

Recite it slowly, with care for the sound, which is half its power; it is often recited on Narasimha Jayanti, the fourteenth day of the bright half of Vaishakha. Read the refrain as the tradition does, against the inner enemies of verse 21.

From the Mantra Mahodadhi

The Mantramahodadhi (Taranga 14, verses 2 to 13) opens its Vishnu mantras with Narasimha. His one-syllable mantra is क्ष्रौं, which Mahidhara calls a wish-fulfilling tree; enclosed by ह्रीं or by ॐ it becomes a three-syllable mantra. Its seer is Atri, its metre gayatri, its deity Narasimha. The six limb placings use After the meditation below, recite it 100,000 times and offer a tenth in homa with ghee and payasa. In the worship that follows, Garuda, Shankara, Shesha, and Brahma are honoured in the four directions, Shri, Hri, Dhriti, and Pushti in the corners, and Narasimha by thirty-two names on the petals. Pronounce क्ष्रौं as “kshraum”.

This is Mahidhara’s procedure for the mantra of the deity, not part of the hymn above. Those who take up a vowed practice often join the two: the mantra japa as the main count, and the hymn recited before or after it. The Guru’s guidance comes first.

Meditation ·

Meaning: I worship Nrihari, whose three eyes are the sun, the moon, and fire; bright as the autumn moon when the clouds have gone; holding in his hands the gesture of fearlessness, the discus, the bow, and the gesture of granting; wearing the crescent moon.

For an anushthan

An anushthan is a vowed course of recitation. Begin with a sankalpa, water in the right hand, stating the purpose, the daily count, and the number of days. Recite at the same time and place each day, counting on a mala, and keep the count the same. Close with a homa of one tenth of the total (dashamsha), or extra recitation in its place. The Guru’s guidance comes first.
