About this text

Kunjika means “key”. Like the Kunjika printed with the Durga Saptashati, this hymn opens with Shiva telling Parvati that its recitation alone gives the fruit of reading the Saptashati, and closes by saying that the Saptashati read without the Kunjika is “like weeping in the forest”.

What sets this form apart is its centre. In place of the familiar Kunjika mantra, it has two mantras of seed syllables, beginning श्रूं श्रूं श्रूं and श्लीं, and then a long mantra that calls on the Goddess to crush, quicken, break, kindle, and release, before the seed-syllable verses close the hymn. It is this form that circulates as the “Gupta” (hidden) Siddha Kunjika.

The printed text given here names its source as the Damara Tantra, in a dialogue of Ishvara (Shiva) and Parvati. Another print, the Shekhar edition of the Durga Saptashati, gives the same hymn as part of the Gauri Tantra of the Rudrayamala; its readings are shown beside the verses. The Rudrayamala volumes in print today do not contain it.

How it is recited

The Marathi print gives this method with the hymn. Begin on a Friday in the bright fortnight. Before the Goddess at home, set a glass of water with a small spoon and a tulsi leaf in it, light a ghee lamp and incense, and offer turmeric and kumkum to Ganesha and the Goddess. Make the sankalpa with water from the spoon in the right palm, saying your wish in plain words in place of “मम सर्वाभीष्टसिद्ध्यर्थे”, and let the water fall into a plate; then recite the whole hymn from “जपे विनियोगः”. Recite it seven times, aloud, each evening between 7 and 8, for six months; the sankalpa is made only once. The note says the practice brings peace and contentment to the home.

How to read the viniyoga

Before many hymns and mantras comes a short dedication, the viniyoga (“application”). It names six things about the mantra and then states what the recitation is for. In plain words:

Rishi (seer): the sage to whom the mantra was first revealed. Chhandas (metre): its rhythm, counted in syllables; anushtubh, the commonest, has four lines of eight syllables, gayatri three lines of eight. Devata: the deity whose power the mantra carries. Bija (seed): the syllable from which that power grows. Shakti (power): its energy. Kilaka (pin): the syllable that fastens the mantra, as Gurus explain it.

In the placing called rishyadi nyasa each is touched to a part of the body. The verse below gives the reason for the first three: the seer is the Guru, so he is borne on the head; the metre is made of syllables, so it sits on the tongue; the deity is known by the mind, so it is placed in the heart. Printed nyasas commonly add the seed at the private parts, the power at the feet, and the pin at the navel.

The texts tie mantra japa and nyasa to initiation (diksha) from a Guru; devotional recitation of a hymn is open to all. AstroShala’s download “Rishi, Chhandas, Devata” explains this in full.

Why the head, the tongue, the heart · सिर, जिह्वा, हृदय क्यों

ऋषिर्गुरुत्वात् शिरसैव धार्यः
छन्दोऽक्षरत्वाद्रसनागतं स्यात् ।
धियाऽवगन्तव्यतया सदैव
हृदि प्रदिष्टा मनुदेवता च ॥

ṛṣirgurutvāt śirasaiva dhāryaḥ
chando’kṣaratvādrasanāgataṁ syāt |
dhiyā’vagantavyatayā sadaiva
hṛdi pradiṣṭā manudevatā ca ||

Meaning: The seer, being the Guru, is to be borne on the head; the metre, being made of syllables, should rest on the tongue; and the deity of the mantra, being known by the mind, is always placed in the heart. (Prapanchasara, Patala 5)

अर्थ: ऋषि गुरु होने के कारण सिर पर ही धारण किए जाते हैं; छन्द अक्षर-रूप होने के कारण जिह्वा पर रहता है; और मन्त्र के देवता बुद्धि से जाने जाने के कारण सदा हृदय में स्थापित होते हैं। (प्रपञ्चसार, पञ्चम पटल)

Pronouncing the seed syllables

Seed syllables (bīja) are pronounced differently in different traditions (sampradāyas), above all the final ṁ, which some close on the lips and others hold as a nasal hum; where the Guru has given a way, follow it. As a guide: ॐ “om”; श्रूं “shroom”; ऐं “aim” (to rhyme with “time”); ह्रीं “hreem”; क्लीं “kleem”; श्लीं “shleem”; ग्लां “glaam”; जूं “joom”; सः “saha”, with a soft echo; विच्चे “vich-chay”. In strings such as धां धीं धूं, keep the three vowels distinct: long “aa”, long “ee”, long “oo”.

For an anushthan

An anushthan is a vowed course of recitation. Begin with a sankalpa, water in the right hand, stating the purpose, the daily count, and the number of days. Recite at the same time and place each day, counting on a mala, and keep the count the same. Many Gurus add a round of the Navarna mantra (ॐ ऐं ह्रीं क्लीं चामुण्डायै विच्चे) before and after the sitting. Close with a homa of one tenth of the total (dashamsha), or extra recitation in its place. The Guru’s guidance comes first.
