Brihat Maha Siddha Kunjika Stotram
The great Kunjika, in its longest form
बृहत् महा सिद्ध कुंजिका स्तोत्र
The longest form of the Kunjika, the key to the Durga Saptashati. Between Shiva’s opening words and the seed-syllable verses it sets lines for release from the curse, the untying of the three knots, a garland of seed syllables, and a long prayer to Mahakala Bhairavi for protection. The full text comes first for unbroken recitation, then each part with its meaning in English and Hindi.

About this text
Kunjika means “key”. As in every form of the Kunjika, Shiva tells Parvati that this hymn alone gives the fruit of reading the Durga Saptashati, and the closing verses say that the Saptashati read without it is “like weeping in the forest”.
This “great” (brihat) form keeps the seed-syllable mantras of the hidden (gupta) Kunjika and adds four passages to them: lines that ask the Goddess to be freed from the curse of Brahma, naming the seers Vasishtha, Gautama, Vishvamitra, Daksha, and Brahma; the untying of the knots of Brahma, Vishnu, and Rudra; a garland of seed syllables on the letters of the alphabet; and a prayer to Mahakala Bhairavi, Aniruddha Sarasvati, for protection, health, and knowledge of the Self.
The colophon names the Rudrayamala, the Gauri Tantra, and the Kali Tantra, in a dialogue of Shiva and Parvati. The text is known from copies in circulation; no printed edition of this form has been traced, and the Rudrayamala volumes in print today do not contain it.
| Deity देवता | The Goddess as Durga, Kunjika, and Mahakala Bhairavi | दुर्गा, कुंजिका और महाकाल भैरवी रूप में देवी |
| Spoken by वक्ता | Shiva, to Parvati | शिव, पार्वती से |
| Where it is found स्रोत | Rudrayamala, Gauri Tantra, and Kali Tantra, by its colophon; known from copies in circulation | पुष्पिका के अनुसार रुद्रयामल, गौरीतन्त्र, कालीतन्त्र; प्रचलित प्रतियों से ज्ञात |
| Parts अंग | Shiva’s words (4 verses), the mantras and prayers, the verses of salutation, the closing verses | शिव-वचन (4 श्लोक), मन्त्र और प्रार्थनाएँ, नमस्कार-श्लोक, फलश्रुति |
Who may recite it
The copy closes with a note in Hindi. It says that anyone who has received initiation (diksha) may recite this hymn, and that a devotee who recites the Saptashati regularly should recite it at the start and the end of the Saptashati. It adds that before japa the placings on the hands and the heart (kara nyasa and hridaya nyasa) are made with the five seeds of the Kulluka mantra, given as “क्रीम हूं स्त्रीं ह्रीं फट्”. Learn the placings from a Guru.

Pronouncing the seed syllables
Seed syllables (bīja) are pronounced differently in different traditions (sampradāyas), above all the final ṁ, which some close on the lips and others hold as a nasal hum; where the Guru has given a way, follow it. As a guide: ॐ “om”; श्रूं “shroom”; ऐं “aim” (to rhyme with “time”); ह्रीं “hreem”; क्लीं “kleem”; क्रीं “kreem”; हूं “hoom”; श्लों “shlom”; ग्लौं “glaum”; जूं “joom”; सः “saha”, with a soft echo. In the garland of seeds, say each letter and its seed as one breath, “am kreem, aam kreem”, and keep long and short vowels distinct.
