Hindu New Year 2023: A Critical Time for India and the World

The Hindu New Year 2023 or The Hindu Nav Varsh 2023, will begin at 10:53:02 P.M. on Tuesday, March 21, 2023. That is when the Pratipada Tithi (first day) of Shukla Paksha (The brighter half of the lunar cycle) of Chaitra (Lunar Month) month starts, thus marking the beginning of the Hindu New Year or Hindu Nav Varsh. However, this year, the Shukla Pratipada tithi commences after sunrise on March 21; therefore, the beginning of the Hindu New Year will be considered from March 22, 2023, when Shukla Pratipada tithi will remain in effect at the time of sunrise.

The Hindu New Year is not like the regular one we celebrate every year on January 1, but it tells us how it will influence the country and its people. However, to analyse all that, we also need the help of Hindu Astrology. For instance, a Hindu Nav Varsh tells us about the upcoming quality of rain, crops and harvest (both summer and winter season based), wealth, warfare, industry outlook, the possibility of natural calamities and famine, etcetera.

Hindu New Year: Vikram Samvat and Shaka Samvat

Along with the Gregorian Calendar system, India also has its own calendar system, not just one but two, that people follow. That are Vikram Samvat and Shaka Samvat. The Government of India (GoI) uses Shaka Samvat as its official calendar. As per Shaka Samvat, March 22 marks the beginning of its first day every year. However, Hindu Festivals and other rituals are celebrated on the basis of Vikram Samvat. Vikram Samvat has been in use since the reign of the Great Indian King Vikramaditya.

The first day of Vikram Samvat is Chaitra Shukla Pratipada, which marks the day of the coronation of King Vikramaditya. Presently, Vikram Samvat 2079 and Shaka Samvat 1944 are in effect. However, with the beginning of the Hindu New Year 2023, Vikram Samvat 2080, and Shaka Samvat 1945 will commence.
