Durga Visarjan: Rituals and Significance

Durga Visarjan is a part of India’s rich religious culture. This festival holds profound importance to Hindus, especially in West Bengal, where people celebrate it passionately and enthusiastically.

During this pious celebration, devotees get up early and bathe. They clean the temple and arrange the pooja samagris like roli, chandan, flowers, and incense. They make garlands for Devi. In addition, all the family members gather to chant mantras, perform aarti and dance joyfully to show their devotion to the revered Goddess for the last time.

Moreover, married women adorn the Goddess with Sindoor or vermillion in community temples and offer her sweets. After worshipping Maa Durga, they play with Sindoor amongst themselves. People call this ritual “Sindoor Khela”. Thousands of devotees perform a big procession to bid farewell to the Goddess with tears of joy and the ‘Dhunchi’ dance, in which people dance to the beats of drums.

Battle with Mahishasura

According to mythological beliefs, Goddess Durga visited the earth with her children after killing Mahishasura, a demon. She had a fierce battle with the demon for several days. The Hindu scripture reveals that her battle began on the Maha Saptami, and she killed him on Dashmi. That’s why she symbolises strength.

On this day, the devotees take the idol of Goddess Durga to the Holy river or a water body for immersion. They perform this ritual in the morning, but Durga Visarjan Muhurta determines the exact time. This day coincides with Dussehra or Vijayadashmi. However, in West Bengal, people call it Bijoya Dasami. It is a common belief that the Goddess reunited with Lord Shiva by returning to Mount Kailash.

The priest lights a clay pot with coconut husk, camphor and incense to produce holy smoke. The holy smoke has a specific significance in the Hindi religion. It makes the environment pious and fills it with positivity. Moreover, the pot is carried in hand, and people perform a traditional dance to express their devotion to Goddess Durga. Lastly, men and women dance with joy on Dhakis, bidding adieu to the Goddess, hoping to welcome her the following year with the same passion and zeal.

Moreover, almost every city in India organised fairs and pandals during the festival. Colours and flavourful food are big attractions for locals and tourists. People buy new clothes and exchange gifts to express their happiness.

Significance Of Dussehra 2022

Dussehra is an integral part of the Hindu community, which they celebrate with zeal and enthusiasm. Additionally, it is also known as Vijayadashmi or Dasara. In Hinduism, Lord Rama is considered the incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Lord Rama defeated the ten-headed demon King Ravana, who abducted Sita, Rama’s wife.

The word “Dussehra” comes from two Sanskrit words, “Dasha” and “Hara”. Dasha means ten, and Hara implies defeat. People celebrate Vijayadasami on the tenth day of Ashvina month. According to the Hindu calendar, Ashvina is the seventh month. Furthermore, Dussehra also marks the beginning of Diwali, which people celebrate precisely 20 days after Dussehra. According to Ramayana, Lord Rama returned to his kingdom after defeating Ravana and completing his 14 years of exile.

Dussehra signifies the end of devils like Ravana, Kumbhakarna and Meghnad. It reflects that no matter how strong the evil is, good can burn down all vices like greed, lust, anger, injustice, ego, and pride.

Rituals Performed During Dussehra Celebration

Hindus celebrate Dussehra with incredible fanfare. During Dussehra Celebration, there is a widespread theatrical execution of Lord Rama’s life tale in theatres and open grounds. It is popular as “Ram Lila”. It mainly shows how Ravana disguised himself and kidnapped Sita. A fierce battle takes place for several days, and Rama finally defeats Ravana and takes Sita back to Ayodhya (his kingdom) with him. People organise skits, plays and dances based on the epic of Ramayana.

Giant effigies of the ten-headed Ravana are set on fire in open fields at night to celebrate Lord Rama’s triumph. For the Dussehra celebration, be it an individual, friends and families visit large fairs to watch the burning effigies of the trio Ravana, Kumbhkaran and Meghnath.
