Red Coral (Moonga) Gemstone
Red coral, known in India as Moonga, is the gemstone of Mars in Vedic astrology. It suits Aries, Scorpio, Cancer, Leo, Sagittarius, and Pisces ascendants when Mars needs strength, is set in gold, and is worn on the ring finger on a Tuesday, in Mars’s hora. Coral is not a mineral but the skeleton of a sea creature, so buy only natural, undyed coral with a lab report, and only after your chart confirms that a stronger Mars will help you.

What Red Coral Represents in Jyotish
Mars is the commander of the planetary court. It rules courage, drive, land and property, younger siblings, technical and engineering work, the police and the armed forces, sport, and every kind of contest. Its colour is the red of blood and fire, and its gem is red coral (pravāla), the only planetary gem that grows in the sea as a living thing.
Mars is exalted in Capricorn and debilitated in Cancer. Coral is meant for a Mars that is good for you but lacks strength: a Mars that rules good houses in your chart but sits in a weak sign, is pressed by enemies, or runs a period in which its push is needed.
A coral does not make Mars gentler. It sharpens it. A sharp knife serves a cook well and cuts a careless hand, which is why the chart has to come first.
Coral and Mangal Dosha
Coral is often sold as the answer to Mangal dosha. It is not one. Mangal dosha concerns Mars’s position in relation to marriage, and it is judged with its recognised exceptions when two charts are matched. A coral only makes Mars stronger. That helps when Mars is good for your chart, and it works against you when Mars itself is the problem.
Who Should Wear Red Coral
Mars rules two signs, Aries and Scorpio, so for every ascendant it owns two houses. Read both together.
| Ascendant | Houses Mars rules | Red coral |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 1st and 8th | Suitable; Mars is the ascendant lord |
| Taurus | 7th and 12th | Avoid |
| Gemini | 6th and 11th | Avoid |
| Cancer | 5th and 10th | Suitable; Mars is the yogakāraka |
| Leo | 4th and 9th | Suitable; Mars is the yogakāraka |
| Virgo | 3rd and 8th | Avoid |
| Libra | 2nd and 7th | Generally not advised |
| Scorpio | 1st and 6th | Suitable; Mars is the ascendant lord |
| Sagittarius | 5th and 12th | Suitable; the fifth-house rulership comes first |
| Capricorn | 4th and 11th | Mixed; only if Mars is well placed |
| Aquarius | 3rd and 10th | Only if Mars is well placed |
| Pisces | 2nd and 9th | Suitable |
Then judge Mars itself: its sign, its house, its aspects, and its strength in the navamsa. Coral tends to show its effect most clearly during Mars’s own Mahadasha or Antardasha.
Who Should Avoid Red Coral
Avoid coral when Mars rules difficult houses for your ascendant, as it does for Taurus, Gemini, and Virgo. Avoid it, too, when the chart already shows a quick temper, rash speed, or constant quarrels that a sharper Mars would worsen, and when the coral has been dyed or rebuilt from powder.
Gemstones not to wear with red coral
Mars counts Mercury as its enemy, so coral is not worn with emerald. Custom also keeps diamond, blue sapphire, and hessonite away from coral. Teachers differ on cat’s eye, since Ketu is said to act like Mars. Ruby (Sun), pearl (Moon), and yellow sapphire (Jupiter), Mars’s friends, may be worn with coral when the chart supports them as well.

Energising Red Coral: Step-by-Step Puja
- On a Tuesday, bathe early and wear clean clothes, red if you have them.
- Dip the coral ring briefly in unboiled cow’s milk mixed with a little Gangajal, then rinse it in clean water. Coral is porous, so do not leave it soaking.
- Place it on a red cloth at your home shrine, with a ghee lamp, incense, and red flowers.
- Offer your prayer to Mars, pictured in the Navagraha Stotra as a youth with a spear in his hand, and, as many families do on Tuesdays, to Hanumān.
- Chant one of the mantras below 108 times, counting on a mala.
- Wear the ring on your ring finger while Mars’s horā is still running.
- If you can, give red lentils, jaggery, or red cloth in charity the same day.
Mantras for Red Coral
Any one of the three mantras below may be used. For a full course of japa for Mars, many teachers prescribe 10,000 repetitions spread over several Tuesdays; for energising the ring, 108 is enough.
Vedic mantra for Mars
ॐ अग्निर्मूर्धा दिवः ककुत्पतिः पृथिव्या अयम् ।
अपां रेतांसि जिन्वति ॥
Oṁ agnir mūrdhā divaḥ kakut patiḥ pṛthivyā ayam |
apāṁ retāṁsi jinvati ||
Meaning: “Agni is the head of heaven and its summit; this lord of the earth quickens the seeds of the waters.” Oṁ is added in recitation; it is not part of the Vedic verse.
Navagraha Stotra verse for Mars
धरणीगर्भसम्भूतं विद्युत्कान्तिसमप्रभम् ।
कुमारं शक्तिहस्तं तं मङ्गलं प्रणमाम्यहम् ॥
dharaṇīgarbhasambhūtaṁ vidyutkāntisamaprabham |
kumāraṁ śaktihastaṁ taṁ maṅgalaṁ praṇamāmy aham ||
Meaning: “I bow to Maṅgala, born of the womb of the Earth, shining like a flash of lightning, the youth with a spear in his hand.”
Bīja mantra of Mars
ॐ क्रां क्रीं क्रौं सः भौमाय नमः
Oṁ krāṁ krīṁ krauṁ saḥ bhaumāya namaḥ
Meaning: the seed syllables of Mars, followed by “salutations to Bhauma”, the son of the Earth. This form comes from later tradition rather than the Vedas, and it is the one most widely used to energise coral.
Natural, Treated, and Imitation Coral
Precious coral is the hard skeleton of tiny sea creatures that live in colonies, built up branch by branch over many years. The finest red coral comes from the Mediterranean, especially the waters around Italy, and good coral also comes from Japan and Taiwan. In the market you will meet:
- Natural precious coral. Cut and polished, with its own colour.
- Dyed coral. Pale or poor coral coloured red. The colour often gathers in cracks and pits.
- Filled or “sponge” coral. A porous coral that has been dyed and filled with resin. It is cheap and looks bright.
- Reconstructed coral. Coral powder bonded with resin and moulded into shape.
- Imitations. Red glass and plastic.
Only natural, undyed precious coral is suitable as an astrological remedy.
How to Tell Genuine Red Coral
Ask for a lab report from a laboratory you can check yourself, such as the Gem Testing Laboratory in Jaipur, the Gemmological Institute of India in Mumbai, IGI, or GIA. It should name the material as natural coral and state whether it has been dyed or filled.
A few signs help before that. Under a 10x lens, natural precious coral usually shows fine parallel growth lines along its length, which glass and plastic do not. Colour that is darker in cracks and pits than on the surface suggests dye. A perfectly uniform, bright red at a low price is rarely natural.
Never test coral with vinegar or lemon juice, as some people do at home. Acids eat into real coral and ruin it.
Is Your Red Coral Working?
Before you wear it, note where you stand in Mars’s areas: your courage and drive, matters of land and property, relations with your younger siblings, and how you handle competition. Watch the same areas over the following weeks. When coral suits the chart, people usually describe more resolve and steadier follow-through, not sudden victories.
If, soon after wearing it, you see a clear run of trouble in these areas, such as more quarrels, rash decisions, or minor accidents, take the ring off and have your chart checked again.
Caring for and Re-energising Your Red Coral
Coral is soft and organic. Keep it away from perfume, soap, acids, heat, and household chemicals, and take it off for cooking and cleaning. Wipe it with a soft, damp cloth, and store it on its own so harder stones cannot scratch it. Repeat the energising puja once a year on a Tuesday, and again if the ring has been off for a long time or has gone for repair.
Substitutes for Red Coral
Carnelian is the usual substitute (upratna) for red coral, and the tradition treats it as weaker. Worship on Tuesdays, chanting Mars’s mantra, and giving red lentils in charity cost little, and they remain the first remedies for Mars.
Coral is chosen from the whole chart. If you are not sure whether it suits you, ask us before you buy, and read our guide to gemstones in Vedic astrology for how gems are chosen, tested, and worn.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who should wear red coral?
People with an Aries, Scorpio, Cancer, Leo, Sagittarius, or Pisces ascendant whose Mars needs strength are the usual candidates. For Cancer and Leo, Mars is the yogakāraka. The full chart and the running dasha decide.
On which finger is red coral worn?
On the ring finger, usually of the right hand, set in gold. Some traditions also use copper.
Does red coral remove Mangal dosha?
No. Coral strengthens Mars; it does not cancel Mangal dosha, and it can work against you when Mars is the source of the trouble.
Can I wear red coral and emerald together?
No. Mars counts Mercury as its enemy, so coral and emerald are not worn together.
How many ratti should red coral be?
Our usual recommendation is 6.25 ratti, about 5.7 carats. The chart and the quality of the coral decide the final weight.
Can I wear red coral without consulting an astrologer?
It is not advisable. For Taurus, Gemini, and Virgo ascendants, coral strengthens a planet that rules difficult houses.
Gemstones are worn as a traditional astrological remedy, not as a treatment for any illness. For any health concern, please consult a qualified doctor.
